We Need More "Varied Types"

One thing this prescient book achieves--and possibly the reason Chesterton wrote it--is to show just how varied such types can be. Our own time, (and he must have foreseen it) for all it's electronic wizardry and lightening communication, is devoid of much true diversity of personality, talent and perspective. The infantile nature of modern political debate is a perfect example. Really, there is no debate at all, just cartoonish demonizing of one's opponent. Nor is there any particular yearning for fundamental truth. Say what you will about the likes of Stevenson, Tolstoy or Savonarola (my favorite) they were originals and, in the case of the latter, prepared to die for their beliefs. Today, our crusaders are merely looking for face time which will allow them to angle their way into a lucrative career. They speak boldly and then retire to Georgetown watering holes to clang glasses with "members from across the aisle." Or they yup it up at parties attended by other "names" regardless of what those names profess. "It's all good" is their motto. But Chesterton manages to draw some quick sketches of personalities with real flavor and who said it's not at all good and it ought to be better--personalities who, in today's world, would probably be exiled to oblivion for reasons of mouth feel. He was able to do this because Western society hadn't become completely therapeutic and (which is to say roughly the same thing) chickafied. I'll take Sir Walter Scott over Camille Paglia, any day!

Of the many books written about hypnosis, this is one of the very finest. It is a fascinating, clear description of a series of experiments that lead to a better understanding of how hypnosis works. These experiments confirm that one cannot directly observe hypnotic experience-because it occurs quietly, deep within the subject. Rather, these experiments offer guidance about how to gather information about the subject's experience. This book offers information valuable to the scientist, clinician and the lay reader alike.

About the Author

A Must-Read for Therapists

He had me at the preface. Here is the first paragraph (from the advanced reader's edition):
"A Sea change is beginning to occur in the mental health system. An international movement to break down the boundaries among the different schools of psychotherapy to find common denominators is occurring. These common denominators are brain based. The new integrative model subsumes the relevant contributions of the past and discards the purely theory driven cul-de-sacs based only on the tight confines of a particular school."

Here is the close of the first section of the preface:
"This book attempts to normalize psychological disorders and their resolution so that you can explain and make more tangible recommendations to your clients. We must leave behind those countertrends that pathologize normal human reactions to life stressors."

I do not know the author, and I have nothing to gain from this recommendation, but I think this book should be required reading for all therapists, from novices to experts. While it claims to focus on helping clients overcome resistance, I don't really see that as the focus, since a client doesn't have to be resistant to benefit from the interventions offered in the book. Unlike traditional therapy training, which usually focuses on a specific approach (psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, etc.), these interventions are based on neurobiological discoveries about the brain that were unknown when most of the popular psychological approaches were developed. Parts of the book are highly technical, with lots of scientific information about brain functioning, but this scientific information is accompanied by simple suggestions for interventions that can be easily explained to therapy clients. The book is peppered with little boxes labeled "Neuroscience" and "Client Education," so it is easy for the reader to quickly hone in on one or the other, although I found both very interesting. The text outside the boxes is a refreshing deviation from typical therapy texts because the author is not selling any particular approach. He is simply offering suggestions for explaining to clients the logic underlying change-oriented therapeutic interventions, based on what is known about how the brain works. This book should be valuable to any therapist, regardless of theoretical orientation, who respects science.

I feel there are more useful books for non-cliniciansIt's not that it's unuseful for a ...

I am a graduate student in a clinical psychology program studying neuropsych, so I jumped at the chance to review this. The integration of therapy and neuroscience that many other works started (Cozolino's many books are fabulous) finds application in Arden's work. Arden actually has several books on brain based therapy (all excellent), but it is this book which fuses contemporary theory with applicable techniques. It's also a decent summary of his ideas from other sources. Having said that, I feel there are more useful books for non-cliniciansIt's not that it's unuseful for a layman, but there are better books which, while technical, are better I think. One that comes to mind is Dr. Michael Merzenich's "Soft-Wired," which I frequently suggest to clients.

Arden makes use of several acronyms to help clinicians recall the principals (SEEDS, for example), which I have never been fond of, but I know some of my colleagues like. His style of writing is approachable, and he provides many examples for clinicians to use in explaining plasticity to clients.

This makes a good adjunct to already existing books. Porges, Cozolino, and Siegel (among others) provide far more of a clinical foundation in terms of theory. I generally prefer primary sources which I can extrapolate from, but I'm a huge nerd. This book by Arden is wonderful for clinicians who may not have a doctorate, or for students just beginning an internship. It's a great reference for the office, too, for when you need to find an intervention which correlates to evidence-based neuroscience you want to incorporate into your practice.

What a breath of fresh air in the psychotherapy world! John Arden has brought the field into the 21st century by skillfully assembling an integrative way of working with clients. Instead of rigidly sticking to a particular modality, this book takes an approach that puts neuroscience front and center when working with clients. In particular, I liked how he incorporates concepts like epigenetics, neuroplasticity, habit formation, and the brain's default mode network as ways of helping clients know more about how to change toxic habits, anxiety, and depression. As a workshop leader, author, and mindfulness teacher, I find this book can provide a fresh perspective and new language for those working in the field--as well as for individuals suffering from anxiety, depression, and addiction. This clearly written book advances the bio-psycho-social perspective that brain health, body health, social health are all vital underpinnings of creating sustainable well-being. John Arden's Brain2Brain offers us an all-natural medicine for life balance and personal growth. Highly recommended!

About the Author

Han Han was born in Shanghai. Not only is he a bestselling author, magazine editor, and blogger, but he is also a race car driver. In recent years, he has won many championships in top racing events, including the China Rally Championship and the China Touring Car Championship. In 2010, he was named GQ Person of the Year and included on Time magazine’s World’s Most Influential People list.

In 2000, Han published his novel Triple Gate, which has sold over two million copies in China. Five Year Anthology of Han Han, published in March 2004, has been translated into French, Korean, Singaporean, Taiwanese, and Japanese. A collection of essays, This Generation: Dispatches from China’s Most Popular Literary Star (and Race Car Driver), was published in English in 2012.

A shout from behind a wall

As Lu Ziye sees it, life is like a TV drama, "hastily made and poorly produced, illogical, moving ahead in dreadful fashion, protracted but impossible to give up." Lu Ziye wants to have roots but he is rooted in quicksand and blown in random directions. As he moves from place to place in a vast country "where constant moves are a necessity," he feels he has "faced extinction again and again with each new and foreign environment." Lu Ziye is endlessly starting over, trying to reinvent his life. At the same time, he is endlessly running away from his life.

On one of his journeys, Lu Ziye takes a room for the night and is joined by Nana, a pregnant sex worker. He's later joined by police officers who break down the door, kick him into oblivion, and transport him to an interrogation room. He is released with a warning but Nana has to bribe the police to avoid a reeducation camp. The bribe leaves her penniless and, for reasons that are not quite clear to either of them, Nana accompanies Lu Ziye as a platonic passenger in the station wagon he has named 1988.

Lu Ziye takes occasional breaks from his narrative to share childhood memories of friends and marbles and bullies and pirate radio stations and a girl in a blue skirt he glimpsed before falling from a flagpole. He also recounts his unhappy career as a journalist in a truth-challenged society. During his road trip with Nana, we hear the story of Nana's life. Neither Lu Ziye nor Nana have been particularly lucky at love.

The journey Lu Ziye takes with Nana has a purpose but the reader only learns of it near the end of the novel. It is at that point that we discover how Lu Ziye came to possess 1988. The story in its entirety is less than compelling but some of its component parts are moving and many are amusing.

Much of the novel is light but there is always a sense of dread lurking in the background. The narrative hints at the omnipresent fear that comes from living in an authoritarian culture but the text is not overtly political. Given the reality of censorship in China, an understated approach is probably the only one Han Han can take, but he manages to convey a sense of pervasive oppression. Lu Ziye is not exactly a rebel but he has a rebellious heart. Perhaps he is following his heart as he wanders but perhaps he lacks the courage to follow it to its true destination. At the same time, he admires the courage displayed by friends who are no longer alive.

As is often the case in road trip novels, Lu Ziye's journey seems to represent his journey through life. The novel suggests that friendships are one secret to enduring that life, but for Lu Ziye, friends are just as transient as the rest of his existence. The ending is surprising, cautiously hopeful but far from optimistic. The novel's subtitle -- "I Want to Talk to the World" -- suggests both a sense of futility and the possibility of making a contribution to the ongoing dialog of life, even if that conversation is not the mark we might intend to leave. Then again, given that Han Han is known for his blogging, perhaps the subtitle is meant as a shout from behind a wall that still muffles much of the sound that reaches the western world.

Memories & a road trip

I enjoyed this book very much! It was translated from original author Han Han by translator Howard Goldblatt

The reason I just couldn't give that extra star, making it 5- star, was that the description about what the book is about is somewhat deceiving to me. I don't know if things got "lost in translation" or if maybe I got lost?

It describes the story of a man & an unfamiliar lady going on a road trip together & the experiences they shared while on this trip. Well, it DOES mention these things, but it's more about the man & his memories from childhood up to being an adult having gone to college & work. Very little amount of the story is about their road trip together BUT it was still a very good story

1988 was what this young man named his car. So named for the year the car was. He found a broken down car & with help from a friend, fixed it enough for him to go on the road

Along the way he stops at a place to rest which is where he meets "Nana" who is a young lady in the profession of a "whore" ( I dislike that term but this is how it translates ) Nana knocks on his door to ask him if he'd like her services, but he's actually more tired than interested in that so he has her come in the room to stand to block the light from coming in

As the story progresses, "Nana" tells him a secret for which he then decides to take her on the road with him in 1988. She's in search for a man who owned a bath house that she knew & he was going to meet up with a friend.

This is now when I thought the story should've talked about their road trip experiences but most of that was saved for the last 20%of the book. The majority of the story is his memories of elementary school, his friend DingDing, other friends in school, & what happened back then. Later he reminisces about his work years for a newspaper , a girl friend he had, & his continued search for what happened to another girl ( his first love)

The ending is now where the man & "Nana" now tell stories to each other & also we are told about their time together on the road.

For me, the ending was a mix of sad & happy & still of ....& now what?

"I never considered myself to be a musician when I was growing up. In fact, I was thoroughly convinced I did not have what it takes to be able to play music.

I took cello lessons and failed miserable. I took piano lessons without making much progress. I sort of learned to play the recorder in school, if you can call playing hot cross buns playing.

What I’m getting at is that I was a terrible musician. I couldn’t sing, I couldn’t keep time, I couldn’t play an instrument, the list of things I couldn’t do with respect to music is long.

I found this particularly frustrating because my father is an absolutely fantastic professional saxophone player. I figured somewhere in me there had to be an inherent talent for music.

I was very wrong.

What I realized as I grew older was that my father didn’t have an inherent musical talent either. What he did have was an unstoppable drive to succeed.

It took me a few years to get over my false idea that I could never be a good musician.

A few years earlier my father had bought me a guitar as a Christmas present. It was sitting in a dusty case in my room, neglected.

I had recently met a man named Jacob, another amazing musician. Jacob’s talent was with string instruments, particularly the bass. I asked his advice about what I should learn first.

He told me to learn music theory, so I went online and began to read. I read a lot and started to teach myself scales. I was still really terrible at the guitar, but I kept at it, and slowly I improved.

I stress the word slowly.

A couple weeks into this process I asked Jacob to teach me guitar, and he said he would. I quickly found out that Jacob–despite being a wonderful player–is a horrible teacher.

Jacob cannot think like a beginner, he cannot break down the knowledge and present it in bite sized pieces that are easy to swallow and digest.

I wrote this book with that in mind.

During the process of teaching myself the guitar, I learned a lot about how to teach guitar. I applied what I learned to write my best-selling guitar series: Scott's Simple Guitar Lessons.

I’m still learning today. Music is extremely complicated and eclectic. I know for a fact that I will never master music, but that was never my goal.

My goal was to be able to play with other people and enjoy doing it.

I've achieved that goal, and it was worth the work.

Now I want to help you achieve your musical goals, no matter what they are.

I want to use what I learned the slow, hard way to make your learning process fast and easy.

A really helpful guide to get your fretboard memorized!

This is a great guide to learning an extremely important skill. There are lots of books out there, many are pretty confusing. For a newbie, the guitar fretboard seems really daunting. This guide really helps. It's written in an easy to follow and friendly manner and is a great tool to help you whiz through memorization. It includes some very helpful exercises to get your fingers connected to your mind and gives the muscle memory to fond the notes you need!

Concise, but not for everyone

I purchased Rang and Dale to help me through Pharmacology, but I didn't find it very helpful. Mainly, there are many outdated drugs, and as I am a student in the United States, many of the British names were confusing. I actually lost exam points because I learned names from this book and couldn't recognize the U.S. names on the tests. (Make sure you use another resource!)
That being said, the chapters are concise and great for review. The illustrations are very good. I especially like the tables in Rang and Dale, which summarize information well.
Borrow it from a fellow student before you purchase it; make sure it's the right text for you. Some of my friends swore by this text in Pharmacology!

A HORRIFYING PERIOD IN HISTORY

This book is one of the most heart-breaking accounts of the Nazi reign that I have ever read. The survivor of the concentration camps says that he did not cry. I want him to know that I did. The inhumane treatment of the Jews and the Polish people, along with many other nationalities, fully depicts what an insane,evil, charismatic leader can do. He and his cronies put the devil into the bodies of little German boys, who grew into SS monsters, and made a large number of German people pretend that they never knew the horrors of the camps. I have read many books about this period in history, such as QB 7, NIGHT, THE PIANIST, and THE GIRL FROM KRAHOW, but this story is the most intimate of all. Evil groups still exist, and terrorists, such as Isis are just as barbaric. This book is a wake-up and see what evil can do to good and innocent people. Everyone should read it. Alice Dennis Kennedy

The unforgivable...

The more I read about the WWII the more I want to know. This was, by far, the world's "darkest hour" and should never be forgotten.
And what the millions people involved were made to suffer by the Germans should never, ever be forgiven. I am catholic and I am ashamed for the little that was done to help those affected. We cannot ever repay or amend for what they suffered.

Pointless

I loved Current for medicine so I was excited to hear they were doing one for PMR. I bought it right away. Unfortunately, this edition seems haphazardly thrown together. The layout is confusing and often times repetitive as they place certain complications of diseases multiple times throughout the book. For example, there's no chapter on DVT management. Instead, pieces of information about this topic are scattered across 4 different chapters: immobility, SCI, stroke, and ortho AND omitted from sections like TBI, Cancer, and Cardiac rehab. So as a quick reference, it doesn't work. I also wish they would be more specific with treatment options, why to choose one over the other, and what side effects they have. Mostly, it's just a convoluted list of things you may or may not use. And because this is a condensed book of PMR, there's a lot of information that gets left out. So as a principal book for study purposes, it doesn't work. Unfortunately then, I'm not sure what the point of having this book is. Get Braddom for your main study book, and the updated version of the little black book for your reference guide instead.

Poor editing, data without citations

I am a new physician opening a DPC practice in the next couple of months and am trying to digest as much info and data as possible while writing my business plan and pitching my business to banks, potential clients, etc. I'm saddened and disappointed that this organization that purports to speak for DPC has done such a poor job with its consumer guide. The formatting and editing are a mess, which is very distracting, and many of the claims are without citation (or are "cited" with a general web address at the end of the chapter). Though I did get a few ideas and patient perspectives from the book, I would look elsewhere for good, solid data and advice.

I needed a book that would help my patients understand their options in their healthcare delivery. The confusion about payment systems ( ie insurance) runs rampant making patients feel trapped in a system they do not understand with an insurance company they don't like, dictating the type of care and relationship they can have with their medical care provider . This book provides a nice explanation of what is going on in medicine today, and shows patients that they DO have a choice , as it shepherds them through the healthcare maze. Great resource!

Enjoyable crime fiction novel, but note series order...

This is an excellent German police procedural, and the third book by Neuhaus that I have read. It is also #3 in the series. Unfortunately, because of the order in which the translations have been released in the USA, and also because the release of the series is incomplete, I actually started with Bad Wolf (#6), then read Snow White Must Die (#4), and just now getting this one. REVERSE ORDER. This is quite confusing going backward in time with regard to the growth of the Kirchhoff-Bodenstein partnership and with character development. In addition, the personal lives of the characters, once known from reading out of order, become less important and somewhat annoying as you knew the decisions and choices they were going to make and the outcome. I always enjoy details about the lead detectives and their lives outside of the current major case.

I must credit a friend, Kim M, for the excellent literary detective work she did to identify the titles and order of the series as published in Germany. It's with regret that I realize that I won't likely be able to read them all until translated in whatever order the publisher decrees, and disappointed that I can't read in order as a good series should be read.

With that now clear, I must say that each story is a well-developed and complex investigative novel that could probably stand on its own IF you hadn't already read another, and more importantly, read them at least in order of them being written instead of backwards. From the synopsis provided and without giving away spoilers, this one involves a series of gruesome murders that lead back to the Third Reich and SS officers taking on the identity of dead Jews, greed, and incredible family secrets. There are many characters, lots of red herrings, and a solid conclusion. I did enjoy it. Happy reading!

"I've never seen anything so horrendous."

Oliver Bodenstein and Pia Kirchoff of the German criminal police have their hands full figuring out who killed whom and why in "The Ice Queen," by Nele Neuhaus (translated from the German by Steven T. Murray). An unidentified perpetrator is picking off elderly people and leaving a five-digit number scrawled near their corpses. Their investigative team will need to unravel a tangled web of deceit and betrayal that has its roots in the distant past. Much to their consternation, Oliver and Pia find themselves having to play catch-up with one or more clever perpetrators who are careful to cover their tracks.

The large cast includes eighty-five year old Vera Kaltensee, a wealthy socialite known for her philanthropy; her bitter former secretary, Thomas Ritter; Vera's three children, Elard, Siegbert, and Jutta; Robert Watkowiak, a penniless alcoholic and ex-convict; Marcus Nowak, an expert in renovation and restoration; and historian Miriam Horowitz, Pia's old school chum. Each of these individuals will play an important role in this tale of long-simmering hatred and retribution.

Its histrionic dialogue, dizzyingly convoluted plot, and over-the-top finale weaken "The Ice Queen." Besides having an unusually high body count, this thriller features more than its share of self-serving and devious individuals, few of whom are worthy of our interest or sympathy. The author throws in unexpected twists and turns that keep the detectives off balance and will have many readers scratching their heads in confusion. Unfortunately, Ms. Neuhaus's writing lacks the depth, subtlety, and emotional resonance that distinguish the best police procedurals from their lesser counterparts.

Good German police procedural...

"The Ice Queen", by German author Nele Neuhaus, is the seventh in the "Kirchoff/von Bodenstein mystery series. I have not read the preceding six. Set in the Taunus area, north of Frankfurt, the book is similar to the police procedurals from the UK which feature a chief detective and his group of underlings, charged with investigating a very gruesome crime. These series tend to follow the lives and careers of the police from book to book. For a reader, reading a successive book in a series is often like catching up with old friends.

An old man is found shot to death in his home, execution-style and Bodenstein and his crew are brought in to investigate the murder. The victim, a Jewish man who had survived the Holocaust and then moved to the US and made a fortune, has returned to the Frankfurt area to live out his last years. But during the autopsy, it's discovered that this Jewish man was not exactly Jewish. He has a tattoo, sure, but it's not that of a concentration camp prisoner; it's the blood-type tattoo of a member of the Waffen-SS. Soon, two other old people are found shot in the same style and careful examination at their pasts also turn up Nazi connections. A local family of wealthy industrialists are at the center of the investigation and as the bodies pile up, Bodenstein is tasked with putting the disparate parts together. The "Ice Queen" is the matriarch of the family. Many of the book's characters are not who they say they are and the sins of war time are brought forward seventy years. The murders occur in Frankfurt in the 2010's but are echos of those which took place in the 1940's in the eastern area of Prussia.

Nele Neuhaus is a good writer. She has written interesting characters and the plot, while a bit convoluted, holds together nicely. Curiously, she did not use or expand on the most interesting plot point - a Nazi SS officer who escapes after the war by assuming a Jewish identity. Years ago, the author Robert Fish, wrote a fascinating novel called "Pursuit", which was the story of an SS officer who plans to evade the Allied forces after WW2 by adopting a Jewish identity, including undergoing plastic surgery to make himself look more Semitic. It's no longer in print, but if you can find a used copy, it's well worth reading.

"The Ice Queen" is the first Neuhaus book I've read, but I'll be back for more.
