Octave Mirbeau, né le 16 février 1848 à Trévières (Calvados) et mort le 16 février 1917 à Paris, est un écrivain, critique d'art et journaliste français. Il connaît une célébrité européenne et de grands succès populaires, tout en étant également apprécié et reconnu par les avant-gardes littéraires et artistiques, ce qui n'est pas commun. Journaliste influent et fort bien rémunéré, critique d’art défenseur des avant-gardes, pamphlétaire redouté, Octave Mirbeau est aussi un romancier novateur, qui a contribué à l'évolution du genre romanesque, et un dramaturge, à la fois classique et moderne, qui a triomphé sur toutes les grandes scènes du monde. Mais, après sa mort, il traverse pendant un demi-siècle une période de purgatoire : il est visiblement trop dérangeant pour la classe dirigeante, tant sur le plan littéraire et esthétique que sur le plan politique et social. Littérairement incorrect, il est inclassable, il fait fi des étiquettes, des théories et des écoles, et il étend à tous les genres littéraires sa contestation radicale des institutions culturelles ; également politiquement incorrect, farouchement individualiste et libertaire, il incarne une figure d'intellectuel critique, potentiellement subversif et « irrécupérable », selon l'expression de Jean-Paul Sartre dans Les Mains sales.

Realistic, gritty novel

Le Journal d'une Femme de Chambre (The Diary of a Chambermaid) was published in 1900 by Octave Mirbeau (1848 - 1917); it previously appeared in serialized form in 1891-2. The novel is presented as the the diary of Célestine, a chambermaid. The device does not always work; sometimes Célestine speaks with the voice of a person far more educated than she is supposed to be.
Through her diary, the novel centers on the vices, miseries, perversions and turpitudes of the bourgeoisie, the "decent people" that employ Célestine and that she observes in close-up (sometimes she is a part of these vices). Domestic service is presented as a modern form of slavery. The novel does not sentimentalize the underclass; Célestine's fellow servants are oblivious to their own interests and adopt instead those of their employers; most are rabid right wingers and staunch anti-Semites. Célestine herself is sexually infatuated with (and later marries) another servant whom she strongly suspects of being a large scale thief, a rapist and a murderer. She ends up as a cafe owner in Cherbourg, mistreating her servants.
As many other writers, Mirbeau found a second life in the movies. There are three versions of this novel; 1916 (Russian), 1946 (American, directed by Jean Renoir), 1964 (French, directed by Luis Buñuel). A fourth version, also French, is announced for 2015. Renoir's version is pure Hollywood; Mirbeau's novel is sanitized and distorted into something that only vaguely resembles the original. Buñuel's and his script writer Jean-Claude Carrière transplant the action from the time of the Dreyfus affair to the years between the World Wars (both periods characterized by the surge of extreme right wing, anti-Semitic politics), refine the novel to its essentials and entrust the excellent Jeanne Moreau with Celestine's role; the result is a masterpiece.

Inside 19th c. French upper class homes!

This diary of a French chamber maid is an excellent look into the tenuous, poor-often mistreated, lives of young women who served the upper classes in the 19th century. The piquant personality of the author leads to an unexpected ending. Very good read!
