About the Author
Carol A. R. Andrews served as Assistant Keeper/Senior Research Assistant in the Department of Egyptian Antiquities at the British Museum from 1971 to 2000.

James Wasserman is an author and book designer whose innovative vision shaped this unique book.

J. Daniel Gunther is an Egyptological scholar and the author of several works on esoteric symbolism.

Excellent Revisions in this Spectacular 20th Anniversary Edition

The Book of Going Forth by Day was first published in 1994 and revised in 1998. This twentieth anniversary edition includes several important new features and twenty new pages.

The first addition is an essay by Egyptological scholar J. Daniel Gunther, who presents an overview of the history of academic research in Egyptian religion and philology during the past two hundred years. The decipherment of the Rosetta Stone in the 1820s began to open the mysteries of ancient Egypt to a world hungry for understanding. Gunther has brought to life some of the trials and passions of scholars who dared journey into a territory that had been wrapped in darkness for millennia.

The second is a critical contribution by Dr. Ogden Goelet, who supervised the original publication; he has compiled an annotated bibliography that replaces and expands upon his twenty-year-old original. It is a state-of-the-art survey of academic sources, especially those created in the past two decades. Dr. Goelet has divided the bibliographical materials into separate categories that include: general studies of Egyptian Afterlife literature; Book of the Dead studies and bibliographies; production techniques of Book of the Dead manuscripts; comprehensive commentaries and translations; suggestions for a program of self-study for the interested amateur; and a selection of online resources. Each section is preceded by a brief introduction that explains its parameters.

The third is a series of improvements to the color images of the Papyrus itself. Some of these were done with reference to the 1979 portfolio of photographs from the British Museum. Other adjustments to the presentation of the scroll were noted during the electronic conversion from its 1993 manual format. All are detailed in a new introduction by James Wasserman, who also discusses the continuing contemporary relevance of ancient Egypt in Western culture.

Another tiny wadjet-eye has been returned to the prow of the solar bark on Plate 18a

Ani and Tutu's headbands were enhanced on Plate 19a; and the third color of the multicolored mound below the swallow was highlighted on Plate 25a.

In addition, our presentation of the Papyrus has been improved by rejoining the hieroglyphs across the gutter at the top of the page for the names of Geb on Plates 3a and 3b, and Iakedked on Plates 9a and 9b. Very minor aesthetic adjustments were made to Plates 5b and 6a, 7b and 8a, and 8b and 9a.

For ease of reference, we added a and b designations to the numbering of the Papyrus plates.

Superb new edition!

What a great book! This is the most advanced version yet of this groundbreaking publication of The Egyptian Book of the Dead: The Book of Going Forth by Day. Dr. Ogden Goelet's Annotated Select Bibliography and Study Guide runs for seven pages and includes the best sources for a program of self-study for the interested reader and his thoughts on each volume listed. J. Daniel Gunther's history of Egyptology makes abundantly clear how young a science Egyptology really is. Before the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 everything posited about the meaning of Egyptian hieroglyphics was pure speculation, and often spectacularly inaccurate! The introduction by James Wasserman highlights the continuing impact of Egypt in modern Western culture, the history of Egypt's fascination since the days of Pythagoras in the sixth century BC, an explanation of the improvements to the Papyrus art made for this edition, and a word on the importance of this book to modern Egyptology during the last 20 years.

Very large book

It's a beautiful book, the only issue I have with it (which is totally my own fault for not bothering to look at the dimensions) is that it's huge in size. Not thickness, but it's 9.5x14 (If I could find my ruler I would double check it, because I could swear it's even larger than that). There's no way it will fit on my bookshelf, one of my friends commented "This isn't a book, it's a tome!" I will end up having to lay it down on my bookshelf and put other books on top just so I can put it somewhere. But since the dimensions are clearly listed in the product details, I won't deduct a star. It really is my own fault.
Moving right along...
The artwork is beautiful, the pages are beautiful. It's really an impressive and gorgeous book and some pages even fold out. As if the hieroglyphics were too valuable to split up for another page, so they just made a larger page and folded it inward. Pretty clever. It's definitely worth the money you pay for it, but just be cautious...it is a very large book and won't fit on a standard bookshelf.
I will probably end up buying another version, one that DOES fit on my shelf better, so that I can easily grab and go. This isn't a book you can take with you anywhere and read at your leisure, which is what I want in my books. Portability.

Although the terms appear to have similar meanings and are often used interchangeably, each of the two feelings influences different patterns of behavior and probably contributes to different character types. This book, whose influence and renown have steadily grown since its first publication, is a psychoanalytic and cultural study of shame and guilt. It comprises two essays on the subject. In Part I, Dr. Gerhart Piers, a psychoanalyst, gives concise definitions of these two previously inadequately define terms, and clearly distinguishes between them. He discusses the experiences that can cause guilt or shame in an individual; why some persons develop into guilt-ridden individuals, and others become shame-driven; and the special and sharply different therapeutic considerations that must be given to the person afflicted with guilt or shame. In Part II, Dr. Milton Singer, an anthropologist, applies Dr. Piers' analysis of guilt and shame within the individual to his own study of cultures. The title of the second essay by Singer is "Shame Cultures and Guilt Cultures."

The first half of this neglected classic is a superb essay discussing the differences between these two extremely important emotions. It shows how shame is a basic reaction to the possibility of abandonment or, at least, loss of love, and is felt by all normal people--and, perhaps all social mammals. Guilt, on the other hand, only occurs in humans over the age of five or six, and involves a person's identifying with, and taking into themselves, NOT their parents, but their parents' AUTHORITY. E.g., if you tell your four-year-old and your eight-year-old kids not to eat the new cake you baked, they will, of course, obey your order while you're still in the kitchen. But after you leave, you know that while the older one will remain away from the cake, the four-year-old will immediately climb up on the table, plunge into it, and shove a big chunk in his mouth. That's because the younger child hasn't yet developed the capacity to self-regulate while the older one has already taken in to himself your authority.

The second half of the book, however, discusses different societies as based on the predominant emotion acting as their social glue. It considers European societies to be based on guilt and Asian ones to be based on shame. While interesting, this second part is based on much shakier ground, and should be taken much less seriously if at all.

Nevertheless, the first half alone is well worth the price of the book.

Basic instruction

This book is different from Cynthia Knox's other books. It has basic
instruction for colored pencil, oil, acrylic, watercolor, and more in the
front section. The second section has full page color artworks to recreate.
The reason why I really love it is because there are actual templates and
transfer paper in the back to use for drawing and painting these beautiful
works of art on my own. This has made the projects very doable, and I
recommend it for beginning and intermediate artists.

Wonderful Art Book!

My daughters and I are really enjoying this art book. The templates are helpful to get the flower designs on paper. We like using different mediums to create artworks - especially these beautiful flowers! I highly recommend this book to all artists.

Convicted felon, John Story, released on parole--April 2001

Another dangerous sexual predator is free, practically in my own community. I don't live in Lovell, but I live in the Big Horn Basin. As a kid when this happened, I never really had a grasp of the depth of John Story's deviant acts until I read this book! This is not about the Mormon church versus the rest of the world as some people in Lovell still argue to anyone who will listen to this day; no, this is about a man who took advantage of his power and position as a trusted family doctor as an opportunity to rape women. This is about woman who, for whatever reasons, were conditioned as children to serve their fathers and to respect males. Young newlywed women who automatically knew to obey their husbands and believed they were nothing without their men. Women who never questioned a male's right to absolute authority. Sadly, these are also woman who never knew the extent of their own ignorance until it was too late.
The events were shocking in the 1980's when they ripped apart Lovell to the point that the wound still has not healed 20 years later. But it was the release on parole of a monster, of the so-called "doctor," that prompted me to finally read this book.
I now know and work with the attorneys in this book which made reading it all that much more exciting--the Honorable Gary Hartman, Scott Kath, the late Honorable John Dixon, Charles Kepler, and William Simpson and I know of Loretta Kepler, Kathy Karpan, and Terry Tharp. The author took some liberties with a few things; for example, Mr. Kepler is not a burly man nor is he a large man, Ms. Kepler is a charming and beautiful woman despite the plain-jane description to the contrary, Judge Hartman did not have a pistol under his robe when the jury verdict was delivered, and, really, Scott Kath is a much more interesting character than Olsen makes him out to be in the book. Furthermore, some of the nasty and degrading descriptions of town people were gross overstatements whereas some of the nicer descriptions were clever understatements of the true problems in Lovell--domestic abuse, alcohol, and to this day men with multiple "wives" and dozens of children.
However, having said that, those did not detract from this very well written book.
As a closing note for those who have read this, remember the exam table? Last year John Story's wife, Marilyn, picked up the "table" from the evidence room at the Big Horn County Courthouse. The table was a key factor in facilitating John Story's rape of literally hundreds of women during so called pelvic examinations. However, John Story no longer has a medical license nor can he ever hold a medical license again as a convicted felon. What does this man, who will surely be classified as a high risk registered sex offender, need with a fancy examination table when he does not have a medical license? Does he think he can sell it on eBay? Or is he starting a home based business?
I guess, this may only be the first story in a series of events yet to happen.......

The Ruination of a Small Town

I have been a fan of Jack Olsen for years, starting way back when he wrote brilliant pieces for "Sports Illustrated." He has the gift of taking non-fiction and bringing it to life on the printed page. I am convinced he could write about an old grocery list and make it interesting.
Lovell, WY, a small insular, highly religious farm community was ripped apart when one of the leading citizens, Dr. John Story, was accused of sexual harassment and rape going back twenty years. He was a general practitioner with OB/GYN a large part of his practice. By the time he came to trial, more than 100 former patients admitted they felt they had been mistreated or raped under the guise of a pelvic examination.
My first thought was how could this have been so widespread and gone on for so long without anyone knowing, complaining, or accusing? The answer is the nature of Lovell itself. The majority of the citizenry belonged to the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormon) or to a very strict fundamentalist church of which Dr. Story was a founding member. Particularly with the LDS women, there is a strong bias in favor of male superiority. They are taught that men (and only men) can become priests of their church and give absolution; rarely is male authority questioned. Along with this background is an incredible innocence and ignorance about sexual functions. It wasn't until a leading church member started asking hard questions after her more enlightened daughters complained to her, that the scope of this crime emerged. The women thought two to three hour examinations were normal and all had taken for granted these examinations took place without the presence of a nurse.
It made very painful reading to see how difficult it was for these women to be taken seriously. The Medical Registry of Wyoming was hostile toward their efforts, but finally gave them a hearing. The leaders of the church, who did not want the church to formally be involved in the issue, did not support them. It took the dedication and incredible hard work of a local sheriff and District Attorney for the county to finally bring Dr. Story to trial. The town split in two along religious lines. The fundamentalist group said it was a "Mormon conspiracy." People who had been friends and neighbors for years were now bitter enemies.
Mr. Olsen has created a page-turner with his balanced narrative that includes many direct interviews with the leading participants. I felt pity for Dr. Story's devoted wife and for many of his well-meaning followers and patients. However, what stands out most in my mind is the bravery and endurance shown by his victims and their willingness to stand by their beliefs and principles.

A doctor's betrayal.

In the early 1980's in Lovell, WY, women came forward with stories of having been raped or taken advantage of by the town's doctor. John Story, was highly respected within the community not only as a doctor, but as an elder in his church. The women he targeted were young, vulnerable, or considered minority citizens who wouldn't say anything or wouldn't be believed. Story was able to "dilate" women for 25 years before enough of them finally got the courage to speak out and push for his license to be revoked. Thanks to the sheriff and the DA, the women were taken seriously and charges were brought against Story. During the investigation, it was discovered that over the years a handful of women had reported that Story had molested them, but were told to go home and be quiet about it, or just weren't believed. Delving further into Story's background, it appeared that he molested over 100 women during his practice. The ensuing trial caused such division in the town, that it never recovered to its former close knit community. Jack Olsen did a wonderful job in researching the background of everyone involved, as well as the charges and trial of John Story.

The party wreaks havoc consistently in harrowing scenes, but at times you can almost sympathize with them, or at least with their desperation. And the novel has a white whale at its core in the form of the fierce, near-mystical warrior Manalargena. Australian first-novelist Wilson writes beautifully, equally expert in describing the magical land as he is with Aboriginal dialect, but his story, at least in the U.S., will inevitably be compared to Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian (1985). About the Author
Rohan Wilson lived a long, mostly lonely, life until a lucky turn of events led him to take up a teaching position in Japan, where he met his wife. They have a son who loves books, as all children should. They live in Launceston, Tasmania, but don't know why. Rohan holds degrees and diplomas from the universities of Tasmania, Southern Queensland and Melbourne. This is his first book.

Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania)'s Black War was fought between 1804 and 1830 when the new and old inhabitants of the island clashed violently over occupation and use of the land and its resources. The end result of the Black War was the dispossession and near annihilation of the indigenous inhabitants. In this novel, researched over a number of years, Rohan Wilson focuses on one roving party: sanctioned by Lieutenant-Governor George Arthur, and was led by John Batman in 1829. While the precise demarcation between fiction and fact is unclear, the story has its own momentum and its own raw impact.

In 1829, Van Diemen's Land had been a British penal colony for 26 years. John Batman was then a grazier (he went on to found Melbourne), and this roving party was to consist of nine men: Batman himself, his farmhand William Gould, four convicts (Baxter, Clarke, Gumm and Toosey), two black trackers from New South Wales (Pigeon and Crook) and Black Bill.

John Batman tells the roving party: `There is among them a chief. A warrior. Some say witch. He is called Manalargena.' `You must bring him down before all others.'

Black Bill, referred to as the Vandemonian, is an indigenous man who has been educated and raised by Europeans. (There is an historical `Black Bill' - William Ponsonby about whom I would like to know more.) He belongs to both cultures, and to neither. As the novel opens, Black Bill is approached by Manalargena to fight with his indigenous clansmen:

`Who is brother. Who is hunter. They forget this thing.'

Black Bill refuses: he has already agreed to accompany Batman. It may be a pragmatic choice: the members of the roving party have been offered freedom, land grants and money; but it is not to be an easy one.

`It was through old country they went, a thousand generations black.'

The events, relationships and confrontations depict the brutal world of early colonial Van Diemen's Land. While many of the acts depicted are violent and cruel, each has a reason and its place in the narrative. The descriptions of the natural world contrast its beauty: `the white cotton crown of Ben Lomond' and hostility: `They scanned the weave of alpine scrub along their sights. To follow him into that realm was a near thing to suicide.', and add to the tension of the story.

Black Bill is the central character in this novel, and it is Black Bill's relationships with his wife Katherine, with John Batman, with Manalargena and with others that brings this novel to life.

A very haunting life, based on troubling historical events.

Beautifully written but brutal story

The Roving Party is set in the 1800's in convict era Tasmania and is about a party commissioned by the Governor to hunt and kill Aborigines. The party is led by John Batman, a prominent property owner and his rag tag bunch consisting of several convicts, and three Aborigines consisting of 2 trackers (interestingly from Parramatta) and 1 "civilised" local, Black Bill. The team are offered freedom and land grants for a successful mission.

What most impressed me about this book was Rohan Wilson's ability to convincingly portray the social conditions of all the characters. Nobody in this story has an easy path; this is a not a straight forward story of the hunter and the hunted, or the good and the bad. There are times when you really for feel for the members of the party (some not given shoes to trek endlessly through cold wet harsh country) while at other times you are made to feel repulsed by their brutal behaviour (amongst themselves, as well as what they do to the Aborigines).

As an Australian myself I found this book hard to read, this is not a part of our history that I am proud of. However I can only praise Wilson for tackling this story so intelligently and from such a convincingly realistic perspective.

Manalargena, the chief of an Aboriginal clan in Tasmania, knowing his clan must fight to survive, recruits Black Bill to join them. Bill declines on the ground that he follows the direction of a white man, John Batman. Bill fails to mention that Batman, intending to collect on a contract from the governor, has already engaged him to hunt Manalargena and his clan, earning a bounty for each one killed or captured. Yet Manalargena, a witch who "has a meanness even God won't forgive," is believed to be (and believes himself to be) protected by a demon. He is not an easy man to kill.

Bill joins the roving party, nine men (including four convicts and two free blacks) following John Batman's lead. They are hard, rough men, cruel men who have been treated cruelly. They fight each other as often as they fight the tribesman they hunt. They regard the Aborigines as uncivilized savages but they are hardly exemplars of civil behavior. Bill, the toughest of them, stands above the fray, but as "a black man raised white" he finds little acceptance among the other members of the roving party. Bill is earning a share of the bounty to hunt his own people, a decision that even Batman's white employees cannot respect. Katherine, Bill's pregnant wife, does not approve of his decision to follow Batman, despite the food his employment puts on the table.

The Roving Party is a fast moving story of violence, but much of the dramatic tension comes from Bill's internal conflict, the doubt that gnaws at him despite his best efforts to ignore his conscience. Although raised and educated by a white family, Bill knows himself to be rooted in those he has been assigned to capture and kill. After the hunt ends, its impact on Bill -- misfortune that he attributes to Manalargena's witchcraft -- continues to drive the story to its powerful conclusion. This is, in a sense, an unconventional story of redemption. It is also a story of a man's struggle to find himself.

The men in the roving party are not academically inclined, but they consider weighty philosophical issues as they hunt their fellow man. Why are the clansmen more deserving of death than the hunters? How do men of any race learn to suffer life with dignity? Do wretched men who commit heinous crimes deserve to have their lives ended by a rope around the neck, their sentences pronounced by judges who "never get their hands dirty with men's blood"? Toward the novel's end, Bill ponders the relationship between strength and sorrow and the uncertain nature of justice.

Rohan Wilson paints the Tasmanian landscape in vivid brushstrokes. From tribesmen to slave traders to prisoners, Wilson's minor characters -- often described with just a few choice words -- are infused with authenticity. There are hints of Hemingway in the stark eloquence of Wilson's prose and in the masculinity that defines the story, yet the novel's strongest characters are women. The Roving Party tells a brutal story but it is a brutality tempered with tenderness and wisdom. It deserves the acclaim it has earned since its 2011 publication in Australia.

I was kind of shocked when I first got this book in the mail. I thought it was going to have a few things I could do to lose a little belly fat. I never thought it was going to be so thorough.
This book is chocked full a lot of information on health issues that are related to and a result of this toxic belly fat. Cutting edge material. What I liked most about it is the fact that the authors tie everything all together. And of course there are suggestions and remedies for helping to alleviate the problem as well. The authors did a great job.

Comprehensive health manual, not just a weight loss book.

I am not really that fat, but decided to check this book out anyway. I was pleasantly surprised to find tons of info about improving my health, not just losing fat. I would have to say that this book is more about improving your health by removing toxins, improving digestion, healing from infections and that sort of thing? I would recommend this book to anyone interested in getting healthier, not just for people seeking to lose weight.

This book was a real eye opener for me. The number of suggestions for getting healthier is amazing. The section about leaky gut was very good. I never before understood how the gut affects your health. I am going to re-read the whole book and change my bad habits to good habits.

I love the inspirational quotes about forests, trees, and plants. I love most of the pictures

This book is full of a variety of illustrations. Some illustrations are very simplistic, some are mostly black, some are very detailed, some are simply flowers, simply leaves, and some are birds and mammals filled with intricate designs.

I am giving this a 4 star, because I love the inspirational quotes about forests, trees, and plants. I love most of the pictures (see attached picture). However, in 20 of the 51 illustrations the ink is smeared a little inside the images and outside the lines, it is not a dark smear more gray a smattering of tiny ink marks(see attached close up).

I used colored pencils and Fiskars Gel pens (available on Amazon) on the deer.

1. 51 Illustrations printed one per page with beautiful, inspirational quotes on the back of each.

2. The paper is not very heavy, Fiskars Gel pens and Crayola markers bled through just a little so either use colored pencils or remove the pages for coloring or place a scrap sheet of paper under the page you are coloring and make sure the picture is dry before removing.

Far from My Fav - A Let Down

I was disappointed with this coloring book. :( It has a gorgeous velvety cover, but the artwork inside was a let down. Compared to other books I have, the artwork is amateurish, and several of the pages look like copy and pasted clip art. Bad clip art. I definitely don't recommend it to anyone who is fairly picky about the quality of their coloring books.

About the Author
Olga Toprover was born in Russia, lived in Canada for a few years, but currently resides in Los Angeles. Olga holds Master Degree in Computer Science from Moscow State University. She is also a published media author. Her scientific education and journalistic experience as well as living in different cities and countries formed her into the writer she is today. Olga believes that true literature is about people. Her stories, above all, are about us. Besides creating amazing new worlds, Olga loves swing dancing, swimming in the ocean and spending time with her children.

Great short stories

It is easy to write a story that makes you sad. And quite difficult to write a story that makes you smile. This book has it all, e.g. in many stories you would do both. I really enjoyed this book.

A literary modern art

Modern art is often scoffed at. There are many just don’t get it - the unrestrained translation of mind in our visible space. The others have no way to prove they do. They are just smitten by the work, not necessarily because they agree with the objective but because they appreciate the artist’s acknowledgement of a free flowing mind. I am the appreciator. Olga Toprover is the artist.
Seventeen shades of love begins with a most oh-so-typical fantasy sequence from a woman who falls for a stranger at a gas station. It turns out to be a dream. What follows is a first drift of this artwork, as the girl who had been craving for some hormonal re-ignition in life gets upset when she finally finds it. For her, it signifies the loss of rare freedom she’d been enjoying from the traps of illogical love. The author’s magic really only comes forth towards the end of that first chapter, with a trivial foam sticking out of a certain driver’s seat making all the difference. The end result is amusement. And that effect is sustained throughout the rest of the book.
Ms. Toprover spends the first two chapters acclimatising us to her work. She only starts to unfold it thereafter. So, what kind of art is it? It is vacuous swish of blue paint which changes shades as it runs in such a way that viewers are compelled to anticipate its transition to a new colour. But blue remains blue. All that changes is a realization that the elusive second colour was present throughout as the colour white in the background. As is described for one of the characters in the story - a little girl - the author paints not just the world as it is, but the emotions behind everything.
Seventeen shades of love that we see through each little story in this book are all distinct in their settings. Yet, it is interesting how much they share in common. They are all narrations of protagonists - mostly women - battling a difficult memory, coming to terms with novel situations and beginnings, an unending fusion of what-ifs and why-nots, failed attempts at justifications, denial of an unflinching hope, and a silent, eternally insurmountable build-up of a mountain of emotions that evaporate in one moment of surprise. Love, as the author shows us, is just an approach we take to life. It is illogical, on the face of our social demeanour, and a reflection of who we actually are - which is perhaps why we can never transform it into words or thoughts with utter clarity. Personally, I find it sad. The author’s acknowledgement of this condition as it is, without pretence or explanations, is precisely what is best about this book.
The writing, translated into English, is without complications. That says a lot, for most of the story is a 1st person narrative of conflicting thoughts. This inevitably brings in a lot of abstracts - an essential ingredient. For instance, “Who said the sky over Canada is bluer? If that were the case she might have formed some slightly more intelligent thoughts.” Olga Toprover reminds me of Woody Allen. Her Pièce De Résistance comes right in the end with short scripts of life in Calfiornia - poppable candies of momentary hullabaloo in the author’s experiences of day-to-day life. Loved the one with a phone call to customer care.
The thing with an artistic expression is that its interpretation is left to the observers. Consequently, I can only guess as to the author’s primary incentive. To think of it, that itself may be one! So read this book to deduce your psyche in matters of love and people.

It was interesting and enjoyable reading. Short stories, mostly about Russian women living outside of Russia and having problems in personal life. Most stories though have a happy end.
Reminds me a bit of O'Henry whose stories I love.
