Gregory of Narek (Armenian: Գրիգոր Նարեկացի Grigor Narekatsi; 951 - 1003) was an Armenian monk, poet, mystical philosopher, theologian and saint of the Armenian Apostolic Church, born into a family of writers. Book is in a foreign language so can't read it! Misleading!

What a shock and disappointment! This book arrived today in a foreign language, Armenian? I can't read it so have to see if I can return it. This is very misleading as the description said the book was translated in numerous languages, it didn't specify that the one I ordered wasn't translated! I guess now looking at it, it does say Armenian edition, I probably only glanced and thought it said American edition!

A Tremendous Achievement

Those familiar with G. K. Chesterton probably know him for his novels (The Man Who Was Thursday), his stories (The Complete Father Brown Stories (Wordsworth Classics) (Wordsworth Collection)), and his non-fiction ORTHODOXY). Even the fans may not be aware that his chief profession in life was as a journalist. Indeed, Chesterton wrote a stunning 3,000 columns during his lifetime. Many collections were published at the time, and others have been added since then. It is said, by the true fanatics, that all 3,000+ are quite good. I wouldn't know, since I've only read a hundred or so. But I can say this. Among all essay collections by any author that I've ever read, "Tremendous Trifles" is the best.

"Tremendous Trifles" is, to put it simply, a series of reflections on everyday life. In "The Twelve Men", Chesterton recounts the story of his call to jury duty. Being chosen merely because his name starts with 'C', he ends up hearing the case of an accused bicycle thief. "We did indeed, well, and truly try the case of the Crown versus the defendant in the issue of stealing bicycles, and we concluded, after much debate, that the Crown was in no ways implicated." Several cases later, Chesterton has an epiphany and realizes why we need juries rather than judges. To professional judges, judging seems ordinary. Only a jury of normal citizens can remember that putting men on trial is an extraordinary thing to do.

In "On Lying in Bed", Chesterton reflects on the ceiling, and the joys of observing it from a bed. In "The Extraordinary Cabman", he tackles the philosophical question of whether anything is actually real, and answers with a definite yes. It's hard to pick the best essay in a collection like this, but I can definitely pick the best title: "The Advantages of Having a Broken Leg". But regardless, every essay is well worth reading, and the whole book is a worthy addition to any library.

A Century of Wonders

2009 marks the hundredth anniversary of this book from 1909, which is a collection of columns the author penned for a British newspaper, the Daily Mail. As such it's a mixed bag; some of the writing is, in my view a 3, and some a 5, thus my rating of a 4. Sometimes I don't know what he's talking about. Other times I find myself quoting a paragraph in an e-mail. This book contains my first encounter with Chesterton, a brief essay called "On Lying in Bed", which I still think one of his best. But when I began this book, although I avidly devour G.K.'s novels, and some of his nonfiction, like Orthodoxy, this one didn't hold me.

I returned to it now and then, as one does, after reading rather more gripping reads. Then its magic kicked in, and in my view, some of the later essays, particularly those that are travelogues, are the best. Other readers will have their favorites; some of mine are:" The advantages of Having One Leg"; "The Twelve Men"; "The Wind and the Trees"; "In Topsy-Turvy Land"; "The Tower"; "The Orthodox Barber"; "Humanity: An Interlude"; "The Little Birds Who Won't Sing"; "The Travellers in State"; "The Prehistoric Railway Station"; "A Glimpse of My Country"; and "The Ballade of a Strange Town".

That's my dozen keepers from these 39 essays, a rather good haul from a book a century old. The difficulty in this volume is that the references, as in most newspaper columns, are to current controversies, culture, and even jokes of the day. The reason this book celebrates a centennial when so many others of the era are forgotten, is because for Chesterton, those passing fancies, all the rage at the moment, are signposts to conditions common to humanity. That's why he remains so quotable. But neither did he write vaguely about universals; he observed and commented on particular people and places in his time. That's why he remains readable.

Few read the sort of column collected here in our day, and fewer now write it. What one notices on reading any Chesterton, however, on dipping into any book almost anywhere, is his delight in living, and looking, and reuminating. This is not a self-help book, but any reader who helps him or herself to it, may be helped regardless, to see more, and enjoy life more. Because his message at bottom is it's OK to enjoy life, to see it as a good gift, to be thankful and revel in it. This is not the frantic optimism of a prescriptive self-help book. To Chesterton, it's simple realism. As he writes in "The Ballade of a Strange Town":

"The false optimism, the modern happiness, tires us because it tells us we fit into this world. The true happiness is that we don't fit. We come from somewhere else. We have lost our way." A hundred years later these words still ring true. Which is why we're still reading him.

Classic Collection of Chesterton Essays

"Tremendous Trifles" features almost 40 of G.K. Chesterton's finest essays. The book was originally published in 1909 and most of the pieces are from Chesterton's column at the "Daily News." While there are some obscure references, modern readers should be able to keep up with the book.

Chesterton offers a celebration to everyday life in these essays. He looks at jury duty, the advantages of laying in bed, toys, falling out of carriages and a host of other topics. Chesterton is in top form here as a writer, making insightful points with his breezy and charming style. He is, as always, very funny.

While Chesterton is not addressing deep religious topics in many of these essays, readers who know him from "The Everlasting Man" and "Orthodoxy" will see glimpses of the same writer--and find another side of one of the great authors and souls of the twentieth century. Highest recommendation.

A must-have for any classic reader

Within his dramatic story are themes that capture the intellect and the emotions: crime and punishment, the relentless persecution of Valjean by Inspector Javert, the desperation of the prostitute Fantine, the amorality of the rogue Thénardier and the universal desire to escape the prisons of our own minds. Les Misérables gave Victor Hugo a canvas upon which he portrayed his criticism of the French political and judicial systems, but the portrait which resulted is larger than life, epic in scope - an extravagant spectacle that dazzles the senses even as it touches the heart.

A masterpiece

Victor Hugo was a genius, and that's probably his masterpiece. It may be a little long and he wanders off a lot in is his writing style, but it's worth it! Read it in the original in french if you can, it's a nice experience.

Note that this version doesn't include the whole book, it's just the fourth of 5 books.

When you're bored of your textbook...

As an AP Psychology student who initially took the class for the sake of credits, this book does a great job to spark students' potential interests for psychology. The textbook by Schacter (I would describe it as pretty dry) we use in class is although well-written, but not concise enough for students to receive the message clearly and efficiently. In this book, however, the voice is distinct and the text is easy-to-read, allowing us to clearly grasp the ideas fast and clear with the help of anecdotes that Corayer provides in the text that accompanies the explanations.

Having had the great fortune of learning from Corayer, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about psychology. Corayer's succinct and clear writing style makes his selection of important psychology concepts and research stick to your head even years after learning from him. His selection of research has also prepared me rather well for college psychology courses.

Michael Corayer is not only able to present the concepts contained in this book in a clear, concise manner, but he does so while remaining consistently engaging throughout the entire text. I'd recommend this in a heartbeat to anyone interested in psychology, whether you're new to the field or looking to brush up on the basics.

Dr. Jeffrey Nevid is Professor of Psychology at St. John's University in New York. He received his doctorate from the State University of New York at Albany and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in evaluation research at Northwestern University. Dr. Nevid has conducted research in many areas of psychology, including health psychology, clinical and community psychology, social psychology, gender and human sexuality, adolescent development, and teaching of psychology. His research publications have appeared in such journals as Health Psychology, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Journal of Community Psychology, Journal of Youth and Adolescence, Behavior Therapy, Psychology and Marketing, Professional Psychology, Teaching of Psychology, Sex Roles, and Journal of Social Psychology, among others. Dr. Nevid also served as Editorial Consultant for the journals Health Psychology and Psychology and Marketing and as Associate Editor for the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. He is actively involved in conducting research on pedagogical advances to help students succeed in their courses.

Nevid's book is nothing short of exceptional. All concepts and theories were presented in an understandable way. I have read the book from cover to cover for an introductory to psychology course, and I received an A. I have read several psychology textbooks during my leisure, and I must say that compared to the others, this book far surpasses them in terms of interpretation. In addition to the clarity of the writer, he provides us with a bit of wit, which I found to be entertaining. A moderate amount of humor makes the repetitiveness of known concepts and theories more bearable and satisfying. Throughout his book he shares several anecdotes that illustrate the concepts found in his book. Omit those who speak ill of this book, for they clearly have no interest in psychology, or reading for that matter.

Great info on a helpful treatment

I have a degenerating spine and have had back pain for over 40 years that has progressed to severe and limiting over the years. I have had friends who have gone to Dr. Shiple but I was afraid to jump on the bandwagon until I saw longer term results from them.. All these friends and I are nurses, they all insist that they were cured by these treatments that they had done several years ago. With me also having fibromyalgia over the years I have grown quite skeptical of new therapies but I have also tried just about every therapy out there. I finally broke down and bought this book before seeing Dr Shiple and felt like the treatment makes sense. He doesn't make extreme promises and recognizes that everyone is different, the problems are all different and that everyone may require a different approach. Some of the areas may be a bit technical for the lay person but you will get the idea and he does want you to be knowledgeable and involved with your treatment
. I had my first prolotherapy treatment over 2 weeks ago and while the treatment itself was not the most comfortable thing in the world I have to say that today I feel so much better. The first two days I had to take it easy and only required Tyl #3 a couple of times a day. I had taken his recommendation of stopping NSAIDS weeks ago and though I always swore by them, now I'm a little leery of them. I worked 4 12 hour shifts in 5 days this past week and did not come home all hunched over in extreme pain as I had been doing in the past. This is the first time that I've felt that there is hope for me and that maybe I won't have to leave nursing due to a disability.
Dr Shiple did the most thorough exam that I have ever had by a medical doctor and spent a good deal of time with me. I'm fortunate that right now my insurance covers this procedure but many don't. They should because if I can get results like this in such a short amount of time for a condition that plagues so many people and uses up so many health care dollars they would actually save money.

This book gives a good breakdown of the metric system and the math needed for calculations of drug dosages. There are examples and questions of every kind. In the back of the book, the answers are given in a detailed step-by-step manner, allowing you to check your work and figure out your mistakes. Good book for learning dosages.

Great Tool!

I am starting a nursing program in September of this year and have to take a test on the second day of school (need to get 100%). I am unable to take the course that was offered over this summer, therefore have to rely on my own abilities with this book. This book has been a godsend!! Math is definitely my weakness so I was worried as to how I'd do. I am doing really well!! Each chapter has a pretest, review, worksheets, and posttest. Very self-explanatory and to the point....Can't say enough....Thanks to this book, I am confident that I will be ready for the test!

About the Author

Mehmet Kocaoğlu, MD, graduated from Istanbul Medical School, University of Istanbul, in 1983 and subsequently performed his residency at the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Istanbul School of Medicine, where he became an Associate Professor in 1996 and continues to work as a lecturer. He is a member of various professional bodies, including the Turkish Association of Orthopedics and Traumatology, the Turkish Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society of North America. Dr. Kocaoğlu is a member of the editorial boards of Acta Orthopaedica et Traumatologica Turcica and Hacettepe Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery. In the past decade he has been the author of nearly 30 scientific publications. His special areas of interest include free vascularized bone grafts, Ilizarov applications, treatment of bone infections, limb lengthening, correction of deformities, and pseudarthrosis treatment.

Hiroyuki Tsuchiya, MD, PhD, is Professor and Chairman of Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Graduate School of Medical Sciences of Kanazawa University. He is a board member of various associations and committees, including the Japanese Orthopedic Association, the International Society of Limb Salvage, the Japanese Association of Clinical Oncology, ASAMI international and the Young Surgeons Committee of SICOT. His major clinical research interests include orthopedic oncology, limb reconstruction and lengthening, and external fixation. He also developed function-saving limb saving surgery, caffeine-potentiated chemotherapy, tumor reconstruction with distraction osteogenesis and tumor-bearing autograft treated by liquid nitrogen, and cryoimmunology for sarcomas. Professor Tsuchiya is a reviewer for a number of leading journals and has himself been the lead or co-author of more than 200 original articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as numerous book chapters, short papers, and proceedings.

Levent Eralp, MD, MSc, graduated from Istanbul Medical School, University of Istanbul, in 1991. He performed his residency at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology at Istanbul Medical School, where he subsequently became first a Lecturer, then an Associate Professor and a full professor since 2009. In 2003 he won a SICOT scholarship to the University Hospital Kanazawa, Japan, to study Oncologic Orthopedics and in 2004 he spent time at Resurgens Orthopedics in Atlanta, USA, working on musculoskeletal infections. His fields of particular interest include oncologic orthopedics, adult reconstruction, musculoskeletal infections, bone lengthening and deformity correction, external fixation, trauma, and total joint replacement, and he has published widely on these topics.

This is an average text on screw, plate, and rod techs for limb straightening and lengthening. It is not well written and frankly, is a waste of energy. Consult other references from Springer for a better treatment of this controversial subject.
I am disappointed by some of the lack of knowledge with respect to mechanics which is erroneously translated in this book to errors in treatment of the fractures and dislocations described.

The book is a great help if you actually have the time to use it. Since my assignments were for my own good and not points it was easy to ignore and not use the book BUT the answers are in the back so it became a good study guide for exams simply by reading through the answers. Maybe if I had had it digitally then I could have done the pages on a "write on PDF" app or something.

Is this the best use of the book? No
Is this the best you are going to get when you are in nursing school? Probably.
