About the Author
Rosalind Brenner, Dip. Metaphysical Science, sat in a courtyard overlooking the square in Kalisz when she realized a story had to be told. She had not considered writing a novel at this stage, and was in love with writing short stories. But Kalisz was alive and the next four years, she wrote the visions appearing in her mind. Rosalind is a mother of three wonderful adults and also an active grandmother. She has traveled to India and Sri Lanka, besides traveling to Poland, her ancestry home, and around her own homeland of Australia. She has sat in Ceremonies with Aboriginal elders in the Australian Desert, and after her youngest child left home went to live in the UK for three years.

A Commendable Contribution on Delicate Cultural Perspectives

An extensive slice of history forms the context for this astounding story of the fraught life of a resilient Jewish character, Alex Berner.
Born at some time in the early period of the 20th century, Alex experiences a reasonably settled early life until his family migrates to Poland and he encounters the privations of Jewish life there once the German invasion of Poland precipitates the Second World War.
Fortunately, Alex avoids the horrors many of his family members then endure, only through a torrid journey across Europe, hiding out from the enemy until he is able to find his way to Palestine, via Egypt.
Later, in England, after the Second World War, he marries Stella and they migrate to Australia, from where the story briefly picks up on their life there.
Eventually, the perspective shifts to their daughter, Rose, and her place in all this.
Each of the characters throughout the story is deftly sketched out by Rosalind Brenner with tenderness and compassion. Collectively, they comprise an amazingly diverse array of complex personalities across several cultural backgrounds.
The story is lively, yet elegantly presented in compact chapters through a concise sequence.
Authenticity exudes the substantial content of the work.
Whether or not specific details of the people, places and situations in the novel can be precisely authenticated, it seems as a novel it is credible as an impressive commendable work.
More than this, the meticulous way through which Rosalind weaves the comprehensive diverse cultural, social and personal threads of the narrative into an integrated consistent overview aspires to a greater paradigm of human analysis.
Teasing out the delicate spectrum trajectory of how intricately cultural perspectives can cohesively coexist with the often more familiar - sometimes even mundane - yet just as significant and relevant, social and personal facets of contemporary life, relative to historical contexts, is among the great enigmas of humanity.
It seems to me Rosalind Brenner journeys intrepidly in her special bountiful contribution to seek to discern and interpret these modalities.

A story of life from Kalisz in Poland to Australia and then a journey back

This book traces the fictional history of the Berners, a Jewish family who moved to the Polish town of Kalisz and established a good life there until the political situation started to change in the 1930’s. It is a Holocaust story with a difference. The focus is life before the Nazis and then the life of the son Alex who, by luck alone, left the town just before the major problems started. It also describes the impact of family stories untold on the next generation. Alex’s daughter Rose goes to visit Kalisz and starts to rediscover and understand her father’s history and how that has impacted her own life. I enjoyed learning about the cultural traditions in Poland and the physical and emotional journeys of the Berner family. Unlike many books with a Holocaust theme this is not a sad story but a story of moving on to new places and finding an inner peace.

KALISZ. A journey of return.

Imagine this…
You are traveling on a country train. There is only one place left when you are seated for dinner in the dining room. You sit opposite a woman, a stranger who pours you a glass of wine. Before you can say anything she opens her heart to tell you a tale rich in culture, religious expression and tradition.
Station after station whizzes past and the light outside begins to fade as the day comes to a close. It’s as if the woman is inspired to share her recently discovered family with you. Somehow she seems to trust you enough to speak openly about the complicated lives, rights, losses and deaths of these Jews in Poland. Through her the Berners from generations past come alive again and express themselves via the hardships of two world wars, and the Holocaust.
Course after course of delicious food is served until the table in front of you both is empty. It is then that the woman realizes that her stop can’t be far away and yet the fate of these people, and the unfolding effects of both the good and bad in us all on the next generation, has you captured. You must find out what happens to them all in the little time that is left.
In reality …
There is no train. There is also no station up ahead. However, thanks to Rosalind Brenner there is a warm, empowering, thought-provoking fictional journey and an absolute must read.
