    Great book!
    By Sasa Filipovic
There are 7 main energy centers in the body, known as chakras. Each chakra is located throughout our body so that it correlates to specific body ailment and physical dysfunctions; each energy center also houses our mental and emotional strengths. The seven chakras when awakened cause a transformation of consciousness, and physical changes in the body. The body will experience ultimate health and the mind will posses a "Knowing" not of this world. An awakened chakra spins or turns, and the sensation can be felt in the body. Chakras is a Sanskrit word meaning, "wheels or disks of energy."

The author writes in a personable tone with expert knowledge. It's still an introductory book because of the level but even if you know about the chakras-you'll gain from this guide. I've read several books about Chakras and I should say that this book provides the most effective and understandable explanation of Chakras. It goes through each of the seven chakras, what they are and their effects, what foods to eat for healing, and other healing techniques for that chakra. Very well explained and informative.

This is a wonderful series that combines both Tibetan Secrets and Chakra Healing. It clearly explains chakras and associations and how to heal chakra blockages through balancing. I really enjoyed this book, its filled with valuable and easy to understand information. Recommended.

There are 7 major Chakra centers of the physical body, where vital energy flows and intersects. Through our Chakras, we transmit and receive physical, emotional, and spiritual energy. The chakras are manifested in one's physical state. The ideal is to have all chakra centers clear, balanced, and vitalized for optimal well-being. Each chakra is associated with a particular area of the body and a color of the spectrum. Stones are used at chakra centers for clearing, revitalizing, and healing. I learned all this from this amazing book. This wonderful collection of books have been instrumental in me finally being able to take charge of my own life. Each book gave me a clear understanding of how Chakra's work, where they are in the body and how to balance them. The author goes into details for each one of them so generally you won't have to look elsewhere to get a decent amount of knowledge on each subject. I found the books to be very informative and enlightening.

Review

"For decades, the Institute of Medicine has released one report after another lamenting the gap between the recognition that cancer affects the whole person, and our ability to address the human needs of the growing population of cancer survivors and their loved ones. With the inaugural publication of the Handbook of Oncology Social Work, help is at hand. This long-awaited volume, written by pioneers in the field of oncology social work, provides a wealth of evidence-based information on how to deliver cancer care for the whole person in a rapidly evolving health care delivery system Kudos to the editors of and many contributors to this outstanding volume, a must read for anyone practicing in oncology.
--Julia H. Rowland, PhD, Director, Office of Cancer Survivorship, National Cancer Institute, NIH/DHHS

"We welcome with great anticipation this comprehensive new Handbook of Oncology Social Work. The Handbookr addresses those issues frequently associated with the social needs of patients including psychological and bereavement issues. Uniquely, it also includes in-depth chapters on current topics such as identifying distress earlier, approaches to diversity issues so frequent in our patient populations, and concepts brought about by longer survivorship. Never before has excellence in care for patients with cancer required as strong a multidisciplinary team as now: this new resource will contribute not only to social workers, but also to all involved with patients and families in the cancer setting. The breadth of experience of the editors and authors is clear throughout the book and enhances its value for all health care professionals in oncology."
--Richard J. Gralla, MD, FACP, Professor of Medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Jacobi Medical Center

"While there have been significant medical advances and increasing numbers of cancer survivors, the human adaptive challenges to this disease have in fact become more complex and long term. Social workers are at the forefront of developing, implementing, and evaluating a broad range of psychosocial services for this population. The Handbook of Oncology Social Work offers educators as well as new and seasoned professionals a wealth of evidence based information, practice wisdom, and the lived experiences of patients and families to undergird their teaching and provision of care. It is an indispensable text and resource for all educators and practitioners in health care."
--Jeanette C. Takamura, MSW, PhD, Dean and Professor, Columbia University School of Social Work

The Handbook of Oncology Social Work is an exceptional, state-of-the-art book that clearly addresses the key issues confronting oncology social workers today. The book emphasizes social work's strong values for sharing decision-making, helping the most vulnerable and distressed, and reducing health disparity. It is an essential resource for social workers and other professionals who want to provide high quality, evidenced-based care to people with cancer and their family members."
--Laurel Northouse PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor Emerita, University of Michigan

"The inaugural Handbook of Oncology Social Work is truly a social work masterpiece. The editors have gathered the experts in the field to compile the most recent evidence-based data in terms of screening, assessment, and interventions that can provide the greatest benefit to cancer patients and their families."
--James Zabora, ScD, MSW, Director, Research & Professional Development, Life with Cancer©, Inova Health System; Assistant Professor of Oncology, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD; President-Elect, APOS

The Handbook of Oncology Social Work is a comprehensive manual addressing the multiple roles and evolving practice of this specialty. By providing psychosocial support beginning at diagnosis and palliative care through the end of life, navigating financial issues and ongoing changes in the health care system, and helping simplify the complexity of the new era of genomic profiling and targeted therapies, the oncology social worker plays a critical role in enabling patients to optimize quality of life while dealing with the emotional, social, physical and financial burdens of cancer. This handbook is an invaluable resource for the entire cancer community."
--Julie R. Gralow, MD, Professor and Director, Breast Medical Oncology, Jill Bennett Endowed Professorship in Breast Cancer, University of Washington School of Medicine; Seattle Cancer Care Alliance; Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center

"It is extremely rare for there to be a textbook that is simultaneously so comprehensive, well researched and clinically practical. [This handbook] is clearly the new gold standard for oncology social work. But to say that this textbook is limited to social workers or cancer alone grossly misses the point. The clinical, educational and research implications of this monumental accomplishment are relevant for other health care professionals and chronic illnesses. The editors and authors represent the encyclopedic wisdom and diversity of thinking of many of the foundational leaders in the field and across disciplines. Significantly, there are also provocative contributions by many evolving leaders in psychosocial oncology which deeply enriches this 'must own' treasure trove of compassionate expertise.
--Matthew J. Loscalzo, LCSW, Liliane Elkins Professor in Supportive Care Programs; Administrative Director, Sheri & Les Biller Patient and Family Resource Center

"Persons with cancers are confronted with a deluge of information and decisions about their illnesses and the impact on their lives. Oncology social workers play a crucial role in helping patients and caregivers navigate this sea of choices. The Handbook of Oncology Social Work encompasses the breadth and depth of expertise and compassion that oncology social workers bring to individuals and families living with cancers."
--Mark G. Kris, MD, Attending Physician, Thoracic Oncology Service; The William and Joy Ruane Chair in Thoracic Oncology, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Professor of Medicine, Weill Cornell Medical College

"The Handbook of Oncology Social Work comes at a perfect time. Since beginning my career 23 years ago, I have seen the challenges of serving oncology patients and their families become exceedingly complex, with rising incidents of cancer, many more individuals living with cancer, and increasing numbers of survivors, many of whom, however, experience a reduced quality of life linked to treatment side effects. The breadth and depth of the learnings covered in the Handbook is a brilliant blending of the history, knowledge, wisdom, and experiences of the nation's oncology social workers integrated with the stories and voices of patients and families. The Handbook is the manual that every oncology health care team should read."
--Moreen Shannon-Dudley, MBA, MSW, LICSW, Director, Supportive Care, Radiation Therapy and Specialty Clinics, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance

"The scope of practice covered in this handbook is essential for any oncology social worker, whether they are new to the field or an experienced practitioner. The handbook will be required reading for all social work interns and fellows. The sheer number of topics and authors reflects the great advances we have made in providing psychosocial care for people living with cancer and their families over the last three decades. It is written in language that is easily transferrable to practice, which will be helpful to social work practitioners and others across the continuum of care in oncology. The authorship of this book is astounding! Congratulations to the many contributors and editors of this wonderful handbook. "
--Christina Austin-Valere, PhD, LCSW, Clinical Oncology Social Worker, Bienes Comprehensive Cancer Center, Holy Cross Hospital, Fort Lauderdale, FL

"Oncology social workers have played a central role in developing the science and art of psychosocial care for people affected by cancer. The size and scope of this inaugural edition of the Handbook of Oncology Social Work is a testament to the numerous important contributions oncology social work has made to the field of psychosocial oncology in the areas of clinical care, education, research, program development, and health policy. Although the focus is on oncology social work, I am certain that professionals in all other fields of oncology that involve patient and family care will find it to be an invaluable resource."
--Paul Jacobsen, PhD, Associate Center Director, Division of Population Science, Moffitt Cancer Center

"This inaugural Handbook of Oncology Social Work codifies in exemplary fashion the wisdom, clinical practice, and art of the oncology social work profession. This outstanding publication highlights the variety of challenges experienced by people living with and undergoing treatment of cancer, cancer survivors, their caregivers, and the bereaved. It provides an overview of multiple topics and excellent clinical practice guidelines for all oncology disciplines. I congratulate the editors and authors for their vision in creating this exceptional book which is an invaluable resource in psychosocial oncology and for all health care professionals."
--Edith P. Mitchell, MD, FACP, Clinical Professor of Medicine and Medical Oncology, Program Leader, Gastrointestinal Oncology, Department of Medical Oncology, Director, Center to Eliminate Cancer Disparities, Associate Director, Diversity Affairs, Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson

"In this rapidly changing health care environment, the comprehensive Handbook of Oncology Social Work is a valuable resource for social workers and members of the health care team who are working to meet the complex needs of people with cancer and their loved ones. Recognition of psychosocial needs and their impact on outcome has led to mandates requiring assessment of social, emotional, and financial concerns and protocols for addressing these needs. Social workers are on the front lines in implementing these new quality measures and in developing programs to assist a growing population. The Handbook defines and describes the range of interventions used by social workers to meet 21st-century needs and will become the cornerstone of oncology social work practice."
--Diane Blum, LMSW, Former Executive Director, CancerCare; Former Editor-in-Chief, Cancer.Net; American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)

"This comprehensive handbook written for oncology social workers is an important resource for anyone who works with people with cancer. It is practical, informative and organized in a manner that makes it easy to use. The nonmedical needs of a person with cancer are vast and always changing, this handbook strives to address them all. As an attorney in this field, this handbook will further my understanding of the psychosocial and practical needs of my clients."
--Randye Retkin, Esq, Director LegalHealth, New York Legal Assistance Group

"The Handbook of Oncology Social Work is truly historic. It is the first book that provides both a comprehensive and deep sense of the myriad roles and values of social work in addressing the complex issues associated with the number two cause of death in the United States. Whether seasoned or new to the field, social workers will find this volume a constant companion to increase their knowledge, skill, and influence on the health care system. Its framework is essential social work-addressing the biopsychosocial and environmental factors affecting cancer patients, their families, and the settings in which they receive services and benefits. Beyond social workers, its interdisciplinary focus should speak to physicians, nurses, and other health care providers, as well as family and professional advocates across the continuum of care."

Choosing Wisdom: Strategies and Inspiration for Growing through Life-Changing Difficulties, by Margaret Plews-Ogan, Justine Owens, Natalie

We all know the saying, "That which does not kill us, makes us stronger," but is that really true? After all, for some people, traumatic experiences ultimately lead to truly debilitating outcomes. For others though, adversity really does seem to lead to "post-traumatic growth" where individuals move through suffering and find their lives changed in positive ways as a result. Why does this growth happen for some people and not others? How exactly does it happen? Can the positive results be purposefully replicated? These are the central questions of a new study conducted by a team of researchers at the University of Virginia. They share their findings, along with practical advice and inspiring stories, in their new book Choosing Wisdom and the companion PBS documentary of the same name.

Based on interviews with two distinct populations-medical patients coping with chronic pain and physicians coping with having been involved in serious medical errors- Choosing Wisdom delves into how average people respond to adversity, how they change, and what factors help or hinder positive change. Through these interviews, the authors chart each person's journey, and though the circumstances of each case may be unique, the commonalities are remarkable.By paying careful attention to the journeys of these exemplars, this cutting-edge research will shed new light on how we can grow, change, and develop wisdom through adversity. It will be a welcome source of inspiration for anyone facing their own difficult journey and for those who seek to aid them along the way.

Myth into Reality
By Frances H. Kakugawa
Choosing Wisdom
This book is strongly recommended for physicians, patients and medical students. Many of the discussions have been heard or seen before, but only on television or movie screens. I kept thinking, " I thought this kind of dialogues and consultations among physicians and between doctors and patients were possible only on TV and movie screen." " I didn't think doctors felt so deeply about their patients."

The authors do not tell you what ought to be done to humanize the relationships among physicians and patients and their families as many books tend to do; They do not tell you how to embrace illnesses and pain and to live within the scope of these disabilities. they show you how it IS being done through stories and dialogues from doctor and patients. It can't get more honest and factual than this. It made me want to embrace those sensitive, compassionate, dedicated and knowledgeable doctors and the equally compassionate and courageous patients.

This book brings the relationships among doctors and between patients to its most idealistic
level, a level often viewed as being too utopian to be attained. It's attained and beyond in these pages.

One message that hit a chord is how we have created a myth about doctors and have forced them to live within this myth. This myth turns doctors into gods and goddesses, thus expecting them to perform beyond human error. Once we see our doctors as human, then the true healing process can begin within a truly human relationship, where forgiveness, understanding and compassion become part of the relationship. Doctors will also be free to do what they do best without fear of lawsuits, once this understanding is established among patients and their families. Imagine families and doctors working together, knowing the best is being practiced. Often, we cannot expect perfections. All the sciences, technology and knowledge cannot remove the humanity of what it means to be human as presented here. Above all that is being said and done, there is that freedom to live better today than we did yesterday.

I'm sharing this book title with many. Hope you're on my list.

Beautifully crafted treatment of the most delicate issue in medical practice, when outcomes disappoint patient and physician.
By marita digney
Down to earth discussion of what it is like for patient and physician when treatment does not produce the desired outcome. Sometimes through error or sometimes through the nature of disease and treatment. We are so accustomed to the now seemingly magical successes of contemporary medicine it is all the more shocking when these quite complex procedures and treatments may not bring the expected results. This book and the CD enter into personal accounts of these experiences from the perspective of the physicians and the patients. A most insightful paradigm is offered for approaching these events and using the experience for increased wisdom and strength for the continuing journey. I purchased this to give to a first year medical student and her parents whom I love and respect and was delighted to find this to share with them.

Cure for Anxiety
By Jennifer Lara
Anxiety is a state we have all felt in some part of our lives but for some people the anxiety becomes a permanent condition that can not stop and this only leads to our whole body begins to fracture inside. Other symptoms follow as depression, insomnia, hair loss, etc. Most people believe that the only way to cure this disease is taking medication, and this is not indicated. This book is the cure without drugs, without having to take five pills per day without having to put foreign substances in your body. A book based on meditation, relaxation and the law of attraction, no doubt. This guide has been helpful for my husband. A man of 47 years who thought that meditation was only for women, today is free from anxiety, stop smoking and enjoy every day of your 30 minutes of meditation.

Remember that if you want to follow the advice in this book as you should, must change the way you feed, change your routine to find the root of your anxiety and cut root.
An excellent book if you are looking for a change.

By LydiaM
Anxiety: Cure For Anxiety, Fear, Panic & Techniques For Stress by Zac Dixon is a book that is written with tangible passion. While Dixon is not the most fluid or technically gifted author, he makes up for that with determination and confidence. This book is a testament to his drive to succeed in every day life, and his determination to share the secret to his success with everyone else.
Dixon promotes a series of exercises with fun names as the key to overcoming such issues as anxiety, fear, anger and stress. Some of them are the Batman Walk, Morning questions, and the scramble pattern. All of them seem easy to follow and remember, and simple enough to incorporate into your everyday life and habits.
While these little exercises probably aren't going to result in instant happiness and a stress-free, anxiety-free life, they still seem like they would be beneficial components in a search for a better life.

Very effective book
By Daniel- Rizza
This is a fantastic book about anxiety. This book delineates distinctive techniques to beat the uneasiness. Anxiety is a mentally crippling disorder, it can hold you back from many opportunities. I have social anxiety, I cannot count the amount of networking parties and other important events I have missed because the thought of being around so many persons made me afraid. One of the problems that persons with anxiety face is lack of confidence and sometimes the only way to build confidence is by self-affirmations and trying to become more social. Overcoming anxiety is not an easy task. It's very hard to come out of the shell specially if you are born shy and timid. The author did a great job. I would love to read more books from this author.

A History of Life-Extensionism In The Twentieth Century, by Ilia Stambler PhD

This work explores the history of life-extensionism in the 20th century. The term life-extensionism is meant to describe an ideological system professing that radical life extension (far beyond the present life expectancy) is desirable on ethical grounds and is possible to achieve through conscious scientific efforts. This work examines major lines of life-extensionist thought, in chronological order, over the course of the 20th century, while focusing on central seminal works representative of each trend and period, by such authors as Elie Metchnikoff, Bernard Shaw, Alexis Carrel, Alexander Bogomolets and others. Their works are considered in their social and intellectual context, as parts of a larger contemporary social and ideological discourse, associated with major political upheavals and social and economic patterns. The following national contexts are considered: France (Chapter One), Germany, Austria, Romania and Switzerland (Chapter Two), Russia (Chapter Three), the US and UK (Chapter Four).
- This work pursues three major aims. The first is to attempt to identify and trace throughout the century several generic biomedical methods whose development or applications were associated with radical hopes for life-extension. Beyond mere hopefulness, this work argues, the desire to radically prolong human life often constituted a formidable, though hardly ever acknowledged, motivation for biomedical research and discovery. It will be shown that novel fields of biomedical science often had their origin in far-reaching pursuits of radical life extension. The dynamic dichotomy between reductionist and holistic methods will be emphasized.
- The second goal is to investigate the ideological and socio-economic backgrounds of the proponents of radical life extension, in order to determine how ideology and economic conditions motivated the life-extensionists and how it affected the science they pursued. For that purpose, the biographies and key writings of several prominent longevity advocates are studied. Their specific ideological premises (attitudes toward religion and progress, pessimism or optimism regarding human perfectibility, and ethical imperatives) as well as their socioeconomic conditions (the ability to conduct and disseminate research in a specific social or economic milieu) are examined in an attempt to find out what conditions have encouraged or discouraged life-extensionist thought. This research argues for the inherent adjustability of life-extensionism, as a particular form of scientific enterprise, to particular prevalent state ideologies.
- The third, more general, aim is to collect a broad register of life-extensionist works, and, based on that register, to establish common traits and goals definitive of life-extensionism, such as valuation of life and constancy, despite all the diversity of methods and ideologies professed. This work will contribute to the understanding of extreme expectations associated with biomedical progress that have been scarcely investigated by biomedical history.
- Review excerpts:
- “This is a truly terrific study. It has taught me a huge number of facts, and perhaps even more importantly it has crystallized a dauntingly diverse body of information and opinion into a coherent narrative with a number of highly insightful conclusions. The quality of writing is also extremely high.”
(Dr. Aubrey de Grey, Chief Science Officer of the SENS Research Foundation, author of Ending Aging: The Rejuvenation Breakthroughs That Could Reverse Human Aging in Our Lifetime, 2007)
- “Ilia has done a very extensive and useful work. A lot is described briefly but accurately. I cannot but think: It is a pity that few among our compatriots or Western or Eastern or Middle Eastern colleagues have read this work.”
(Prof. Alexey Olovnikov, Moscow Institute of Biochemical Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, author of the telomere hypothesis of aging, translated from Russian)

Learning from others' mistakes
By Marios Kyriazis
I had the chance to read an early copy of this book and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in life extension, history of science or general scientific method. Stambler's account is meticulous, detailed and probing, providing details about the efforts to extend life viewed within the social structure of each period. The account of repeated failed and strange attempts at life extension is far from mere historical curiosity. It is a warning to us, the modern scientists and researchers, to learn from the past and devise new and appropriate ways of thinking, if we want to leave a worthwhile legacy to the new generation.

My view is, of course, that the answer to defeating aging is not going to be found in a physical, repair-only (or a biotechnological) therapy.Musing on Stambler's account of several generations of seekers of the 'elixir of youth' I can only reach one conclusion. That we must now look away from the physical, and embrace other dimensions such as techno-cultural and those based on adaptive evolution, complexity and self-organisation. This is appropriate for our generation. Let us hope it will also be appropriate for future generations.

By Daniel Syrkin
This is a first rate historical analysis of a fascinating, and rather neglected history - the international quest to bring about human longevity. stambler uses sources of many different kinds, in many different languages, to portray a sweeping drama - one whose final chapter has yet to be written. Highly recommended.

A Source of Perspective, Insight, and Hope for Life Extension
By G. Stolyarov II
A History of Life-Extensionism in the Twentieth Century by Ilia Stambler is the most thorough treatment to date of the ideas of famous thinkers and scientists who attempted to prolong human lifespans. In this detailed and impressively documented work - spanning 540 pages - Dr. Stambler explores the works of life-extensionist thinkers and practitioners from a vast variety of ideological, national, and methodological backgrounds. Dr. Stambler's opus will enable today's advocates of human life extension to understand the immensely rich and interesting historical legacy that they can draw upon.

In substance, I agree with Dr. Stambler's central observation that life-extensionist thinkers tended to adapt to the political and ideological climates of the societies in which they lived. I do suspect that, in some regimes (e.g., communist and fascist ones), the adaptation was partly a form of protection from official persecution. Even then, Soviet life-extensionists were unable to avoid purges and denunciations if they fell out of favor with the dominant scientific establishment. My own thinking is that life-extensionism is a powerful enough human motive that it will attempt to thrive in any society and under any regime. However, some regimes are more dangerous for life-extensionism than others - especially if they explicitly persecute those who work on life extension. If, on the other hand, complete freedom of scientific inquiry exists (with no barriers to performing research that respects all human rights or getting such research published), then significant progress can occur in a variety of political/ideological environments.

Even so, I have been tremendously interested to delve into Dr. Stambler's discussion of the deep roots of life-extensionist thought in Russian society, where ideas favoring life prolongation have taken hold despite a long history of authoritarianism and more general human suffering. I even remember my own very early years in Minsk, where I found it easy to adopt an anti-death attitude the moment I learned about death - and where, even in childhood, I found my support for human life extension to be largely uncontroversial from an ethical standpoint. When I moved to the United States, I encountered far more resistance to this idea than I ever did in Belarus. While most Americans are not opposed to advanced medicine and concerted efforts to fight specific diseases of old age, there does still seem to be a culturally ingrained perception of some "maximum lifespan" beyond which life extension is feared, even though it is considered acceptable up to that limit. I think, however, that the dynamics of a competitive economy with some degree of freedom of research will ultimately enable most Americans to accept longer lifespans in practice, even if there is no intellectual revolution in their minds. The key challenge in the United States is to remove inadvertent institutional obstacles to progress (e.g., the extremely time-consuming FDA approval process for treatments), and also to prevent new obstacles from being established. Once radical life extension does occur, most Americans will explicitly or tacitly embrace it.

Dr. Stambler portrays American life-extensionist thinking as aligned with a capitalist, free-market, libertarian outlook - and this is often true, but it may be an exception to the book's thesis that life-extensionist thinkers adapt to the predominant ideological environments that surround them. My own observation regarding American life-extensionism is that it does seem to correspond with a type of free-market libertarianism that is far outside the current ideological mainstream (though it is growing in popularity). The views of Peter Thiel, Ray Kurzweil, Peter Diamandis, Reason (of FightAging.org), and Max More are far from the views of the political establishment in Washington, D.C., which tends to be much more in favor of a centralized welfare/security nation-state with elements of corporatism, but not a libertarian free market. The love of liberty is a strong part of American history and culture - and continues to feature strongly in the attitudes of many Americans (including some wealthy and prominent ones) - but I do not think the political establishment reflects this idea at all anymore. An interesting thought on this matter is that it might have become easier in recent years for life-extensionists not to represent the dominant paradigm in their society or regime and still to prominently pursue life-extension endeavors. If this is so, then this would be an encouraging sign of a greater emerging diversity of approaches, and generally greater tolerance of such diversity on the part of regimes. After all, the American regime, for all of its flaws, has generally not been cracking down on the libertarian life-extensionists who disagree with it politically. At the same time, as Dr. Stambler points out, the United States remains the leading country in life-extension research - and this occurs in spite of the political disagreements between many life-extensionists and the regime.

A History of Life-Extensionism in the Twentieth Century offers tremendous value to readers in encapsulating a diversity of vantage points on and approaches toward human life extension throughout history. While many of the pioneers in this area failed to achieve their ultimate goal, they did advance human biological knowledge in important, incremental ways while doing so. Furthermore, they navigated political and ideological environments that were often far more hostile to unhampered technological progress than the environments in many Western countries today. This should enable readers to hold out hope that continued biomedical progress toward greater human lifespans could be made in our era and could accelerate with our support and advocacy.

"Is it the devil we're running from, then?"

The question, uttered in the mildest of tones, made Harry Lester wince. "Worse," he threw over his shoulder at his groom and general henchman, Dawlish. "The matchmaking mamas—in league with the dragons of the ton." Harry edged back on the reins, feathering a curve at speed. He saw no reason to ease the wicked pace. His match greys, sleek and powerful, were quite content to keep the bits between their teeth. His curricle rushed along in their wake; Newmarket lay ahead. "And we're not running—it's called a strategic retreat."

"Is that so? Well, can't say I blame you," came in Dawlish's dour accents. "Who'd ever have thought to see Master Jack landed—and without much of a fight, if Pinkerton's on the up. Right taken aback, is Pinker-ton." When this information elicited no response, Dawlish added, "Considering his position, he is."

Harry snorted. "Nothing will part Pinkerton from Jack—not even a wife. He'll swallow the pill when the time comes."

"Aye—p'raps. Still, can't say I'd relish the prospect of answering to a missus—not after all these years."

Harry's lips quirked. Realising that Dawlish, riding on the box behind him, couldn't see it, he gave into the urge to smile. Dawlish had been with him forever, having, as a fifteen-year-old groom, attached himself to the second son of the Lester household the instant said son had been put atop a pony. Their old cook had maintained it was a clear case of like to like; Dawlish's life was horses—he had recognised a master in the making and had followed doggedly in his wake. "You needn't worry, you old curmudgeon. I can assure you I've no intention, willingly or otherwise, of succumbing to any siren's lures."

"All very well to say so," Dawlish grumbled. "But when these things happen, seems like there's no gainsaying them. Just look at Master Jack."

"I'd rather not," Harry curtly replied. Dwelling on his elder brother's rapid descent into matrimony was an exercise guaranteed to shake his confidence. With only two years separating them, he and Jack had led much the same lives. They'd come on the town together more than ten years ago. Admittedly, Jack had less reason than he to question love's worth, nevertheless, his brother had been, as Dawlish had observed, a most willing conquest. The fact made him edgy.

"You planning on keeping from London for the rest of yore life?"

"I sincerely hope it won't come to that." Harry checked the greys for a slight descent. The heath lay before them, a haven free of matchmakers and dragons alike. "Doubtless my uninterest will be duly noted. With any luck, if I lay low, they'll have forgotten me by next Season."

"Wouldn't have thought, with all the energy you've put into raising a reputation like you have, that they'd be so keen."

Harry's lip curled. "Money, Dawlish, will serve to excuse any number of sins."

He waited, expecting Dawlish to cap the comment with some gloomy pronouncement to the effect that if the madams of society could overlook his transgressions then no one was safe. But no comment came; his gaze fixed unseeing on his leader's ears, Harry grudgingly reflected that the wealth with which he and his brothers, Gerald as well as Jack, had recently been blessed, was indeed sufficient to excuse a lifetime of social sins.

His illusions were few—he knew who and what he was—a rake, one of the wolves of the ton, a hellion, a Corinthian, a superlative rider and exceptional breeder of quality horseflesh, an amateur boxer of note, an excellent shot, a keen and successful huntsman on the field and off. For the past ten and more years, Society had been his playing field. Capitalising on natural talents, and the position his birth had bestowed, he had spent the years in hedonistic pleasure, sampling women much as he had the wines. There'd been none to gainsay him, none to stand in his path and challenge his profligate ways.

Now, of course, with a positively disgusting fortune at his back, they'd be lining up to do so.

Harry snorted and refocused on the road. The sweet damsels of the ton could offer until they were blue in the face—he wasn't about to buy.

The junction with the road to Cambridge loomed ahead. Harry checked his team, still sprightly despite their dash from London. He'd nursed them along the main road, only letting them have their heads once they'd passed Great Chesterford and picked up the less-frequented Newmarket road. They'd passed a few slower-moving carriages; most of the gentlemen intent on the week's racing would already be in Newmarket.

About them, the heath lay flat and largely featureless, with only a few stands of trees, windbreaks and the odd coppice to lend relief. There were no carriages approaching on the Cambridge road; Harry swung his team onto the hard surface and flicked the leader's ear. Newmarket—and the comfort of his regular rooms at the Barbican Arms—lay but a few miles on. "To y'r left."

Dawlish's warning growl came over his shoulder in the same instant Harry glimpsed movement in the stand of trees bordering the road ahead. He flicked both horses' withers; as the lash softly swooshed back up the whip-handle, he slackened the reins, transferring them to his left hand. With his right, he reached for the loaded pistol he kept under the seat, just behind his right boot.

As his fingers closed about the chased butt, he registered the incongruity of the scene.

Dawlish put it into words, a heavy horse pistol in his hands. "On the king's highway in broad daylight—never-you-mind! What's the world a-coming to, I asks you?"

The curricle sped on.

Harry wasn't entirely surprised when the men milling in the trees made no attempt to halt them. They were mounted but, even so, would have had the devil of a time hauling in the flying greys. He counted at least five as they flashed past, all in frieze and heavily muffled. The sound of stifled cursing dwindled behind them.

Dawlish muttered darkly, rummaging about restowing his pistols. "Stap me, but they even had a wagon backed up in them trees. Right confident of their haul they must be."

Harry frowned.

The road curved ahead; he regathered the slack reins and checked the greys fractionally.

They rounded the curve—Harry's eyes flew wide.

He hauled back on the reins with all his strength, slewing the greys across the road. They came to a snorting, stamping halt, their noses all but in the low hedge.

The curricle rocked perilously, then settled back on its springs.

Curses turned the air about his ears blue.

Harry paid no attention; Dawlish was still up behind him, not in the ditch. Before him, on the other hand, was a scene of disaster.

A travelling carriage lay on its side, not in the ditch but blocking most of the road. It looked as if one of the back wheels had disintegrated; the ponderous contraption, top-heavy with luggage, had toppled sideways. The accident had only just occurred—the upper wheels of the carriage were still slowly rotating. Harry blinked. A young lad, a groom presumably, was struggling to haul a hysterical girl from the ditch. An older man, the coachman from his attire, was hovering anxiously over a thin grey-haired woman, laid out on the ground.

The coach team was in a flat panic.

Without a word, Harry and Dawlish leapt to the ground and ran to calm the horses.

It took a good five minutes to soothe the brutes, good, strong coach horses with the full stubbornness and dim wits of their breed. With the traces finally untangled, Harry left the team in Dawlish's hands; the young groom was still helplessly pleading with the tearful girl while the coachman dithered over the older woman, clearly caught between duty and a wish to lend succour, if he only knew how.

The woman groaned as Harry walked up. Her eyes were closed; she lay straight and rigid on the ground, her hands crossed over her flat chest.

"My ankle—!" A spasm of pain twisted her angular features, tight under an iron-grey bun. "Damn you, Joshua—when I get back on my feet I'll have your hide for a footstool, I will." She drew her breath in in a painful hiss. "If I ever get back on my feet."

Harry blinked; the woman's tones were startlingly reminiscent of Dawlish in complaining mode. He raised his brows as the coachman lumbered to his feet and touched his forehead. "Is there anyone in the carriage?"

The coachman's face blanked in shock.

"Oh my God!" Her eyes snapping open, the woman sat bolt upright. "The mistress and Miss Heather!" Her startled gaze fell on the carriage. "Damn you, Joshua—what are you doing, mooning over me when the mistress is likely lying in a heap?" Frantically, she hit at the coachman's legs, pushing him towards the carriage.

"Don't panic."

The injunction floated up out of the carriage, calm and assured.

"We're perfectly all right—just a bit shaken." The clear, very feminine voice paused before adding, a touch hesitantly, "But we can't get out."

With a muttered curse, Harry strode to the carriage, pausing only to shrug out of his greatcoat and fling it into the curricle. Reaching up to the back wheel, he hauled himself onto the body. Standing on the coach's now horizontal side, he bent and, grasping the handle, hauled the door open.

Planting one booted foot on either side of the coach step, he looked down into the dimness within. And blinked.

The sight that met his eyes was momentarily dazzling. A woman stood in the shaft of sunshine pouring through the doorway. Her face, upturned, was heart-shaped; a broad forehead was set beneath dark hair pulled severely back. Her features were well defined; a straight nose and full, well-curved lips above a delicate but determined chin.

Her skin was the palest ivory, the colour of priceless pearls; beyond his control, Harry's gaze skimmed her cheeks and the graceful curve of her slender neck before coming to rest on the ripe swell of her breasts. Standing over her as he was, they were amply exposed to his sight even though her modish carriage dress was in no way indecorous.

Harry's palms tingled.

Large blue eyes fringed with long black lashes blinked up at him.

For an instant, Lucinda Babbacombe was not entirely sure she hadn't sustained a blow on the head—what else could excuse this vision, conjured from her deepest dreams?

Tall and lean, broad-shouldered, slim-hipped, he towered above her, long, sleekly muscled legs braced on either side of the door. Sunlight haloed his golden locks; with the light behind him she could not make out his features yet she sensed the tension that held him.

Lucinda blinked rapidly. A light blush tinged her cheeks; she looked away—but not before she registered the subdued elegance of his garments—the tightly-fitting grey coat, superbly cut, style in every line, worn over clinging ivory inexpressibles, which clearly revealed the long muscles of his thighs. His calves were encased in gleaming Hessians; his linen was crisp and white. There were, she noted, no fobs or seals hanging at his waist, only a single gold pin in his cravat.

Prevailing opinion suggested such severe attire should render a gentleman uninteresting. Unremarkable. Prevailing opinion was wrong.

He shifted—and a large, long-fingered, extremely elegant hand reached down to her.

"Take my hand—I'll pull you up. One of the wheels is shattered—it's impossible to right the carriage."

His voice was deep, drawling, an undercurrent Lu-cinda couldn't identify sliding beneath the silken tones. She glanced up through her lashes. He had moved to the side of the door and had gone down on one knee. The light now reached his face, illuminating features that seemed to harden as her gaze touched them. His hand moved impatiently; a black sapphire set in a gold signet glimmered darkly. He would need to be very strong to lift her out with one arm. Subduing the thought that her rescue might well prove a greater threat than her plight, Lucinda reached for his hand.

Their palms met; long fingers curled about her wrist. Lucinda brought her other hand up and clasped it about his—and she was airborne.

She drew in a swift breath—an arm of steel wrapped about her waist; her diaphragm seized. She blinked—and found herself on her knees, held fast in his embrace, locked breast to chest with her unnerving rescuer.

Her eyes were on a level with his lips. They were as severe as his clothes, chiselled and firm. His jaw was distinctly squared, the patrician line of his nose a testimony to his antecedents. The planes of his face were hard, as hard as the body steadying hers, holding her balanced on the edge of the carriage doorframe. He had released her hands; they had fallen to lie against his chest. One of her hips was pressed against his, the other against his muscled thigh. Lucinda forgot about breathing.

Cautiously, she lifted her eyes to his—and saw the sea, calm and clear, a cool, crystalline pale green.

Their gazes locked.

Mesmerised, Lucinda drowned in the green sea, her skin lapped by waves of warmth, her mind suborned to sensation. She felt her lips soften, felt herself lean into him—and blinked wildly.

A tremor shook her. The muscles surrounding her twitched, then stilled.

She felt him draw breath.

"Careful," was all he said as he slowly rose, drawing her up with him, holding her steady until her feet could find purchase on the carriage.

Lucinda wondered just what danger he was warning her against.

Forcing his arms from her, Harry struggled to shackle his impulses, straining at their leash. "I'll have to lower you to the ground."

Peering over the carriage side, Lucinda could only nod. The drop was six feet and more. She felt him shift behind her; she jumped as his hands slipped beneath her arms.

"Don't wriggle or try to jump. I'll let go when your coachman has hold of you."

Joshua was waiting below. Lucinda nodded; speech was beyond her.

Harry gripped her firmly and swung her over the edge. The coachman quickly grasped her legs; Harry let go—but could not prevent his fingers from brushing the soft sides of her breasts. He clenched his jaw and tried to eradicate the memory but his fingertips burned.

Once on terra firma, Lucinda was pleased to discover her wits once more at her command. Whatever curious influence had befuddled her faculties was, thank Heaven, purely transitory.

A quick glance upwards confirmed that her rescuer had turned back to render a like service to her stepdaughter. Reflecting that at barely seventeen Heather's susceptibility to his particular brand of wizardry was probably a good deal less than her own, Lucinda left him to it.

After one comprehensive glance about the scene, she marched across to the ditch, leaned over and dealt Amy, the tweeny, a sharp slap. "Enough," she declared, as if she was speaking of nothing more than kneading dough. "Now come and help with Agatha."

Amy's tear-drenched eyes opened wide, then blinked. "Yes, mum." She sniffed—then shot a watery smile at Sim, the groom, and struggled up out of the thankfully dry ditch.

Lucinda was already on her way to Agatha, prone in the road. "Sim—help with the horses. Oh—and do get these stones out of the road." She pointed a toe at the collection of large, jagged rocks littering the highway. "I dare say it was one of these that caused our wheel to break. And I expect you'd better start unloading the carriage."

"Aye, mum."

Halting by Agatha's side, Lucinda bent to look down at her. "What is it and how bad?"

Lips compressed, Agatha opened iron-grey eyes and squinted up at her. "It's just my ankle—it'll be better directly."

"Indeed," Lucinda remarked, getting down on her knees to examine the injured limb. "That's no doubt why you're white as a sheet."

"Nonsense—oooh!" Agatha sucked in a quick breath and closed her eyes.

"Stop fussing and let me bind it."

Although not in large print, be aware this novel was included in Rogues' Reform by Harlequin in 2000. Rogues' Reform contains three Stephanie Laurens stories (including An Unwilling Conquest) set during the English Regency. The stories feature the romances of the three Lester siblings, a sister and two brothers. The set is excellent and I would highly recommend them. They are much tamer, however, than Laurens more recent novels dealing with the Cynster family. Note: the hero in A Comfortable Wife, Lord Phillip Ruthven is introduced in Rogues' Reform.

A 4 1/2 Star Traditional Regency
By Beverly Romance Books
Stephanie Laurens, noted for her sensual Cynster novels, breaks away from the Cynsters with this traditional Regency Romance. Handsome Harry Lester, horseracer and known rake, meets the beautiful, independent Mrs. Lucinda Babbacombe, widow and businesswoman, as he pulls her out of her overturned carriage on the road to Newmarket. Lucinda needs to remain in town in order to visit the various inns she owns. Harry has Lucinda stay with his Aunt Em in order to keep an eye on her so that the other rakes in town do not take advantage of the beautiful widow. Harry vows to never succumb to marriage like his friends and family and fights the allure of Luccinda. Eventually they come together one passionate afternoon. Harry then proposes to Lucinda, but she declines, feeling he is proposing out of honor rather than love. Harry then decides that he will win Lucinda's love by courting her in the traditional way. If you are a fan of the Regency, you will enjoy this courtship and romp through the ballrooms of the ton. Once again Ms. Laurens delights us with her knowledge of horseracing in the Regency period. If you are a fan of her other sensual romances, you will be a bit frustrated waiting for more of her wonderfully written love scenes, which just aren't here. This is a heartwarming story that will keep you smiling and believing that the traditional Regency is not a dead genre.

Truly an unwilling conquest 3 1/2 stars
By KA Reader
I love Stephanie Laurens and have read (and collected) just about all of her Cynster and Bastion Club Books but honestly if I had started with this book I cant be sure if I would have become the fan I am today. Dont get me wrong its an OK book but not what I have come to expect. I can only excuse it by saying it was one of her earlier books and released through Harlequin Mills & Boon London.

From the first meeting of Harry and Lucinda they are intrigue by each other. Later after becoming intimate with her, Harry decides that they should marry but Lucinda refuses because she wants Harry to love her first. However Harry has been burned in a relationship before and refuses to risk the same thing happening again. Lucinda soon despairs that he will ever express his love and starts to accept that her love may have to be enough. Eventually Harry explains that the manner in which he acted was to show proof of his devotion and love.

I found the hero too restrained for my liking, too impassive. Yes he appoints himself as her protector and thereby shows that he does care but he refused to show any emotions, except for annoyance. He does not romance Lucinda or does anything to show she is his world and that he needs her to make his life meaningful. What he says was proof of his love seems more more like proof of his possessiveness towards Lucinda.

Conclusion: Good plot, well written but not enough passion and romance.
