Saul Bellow: Novels 1984-2000: (Library of America #260), by Saul Bellow

For his centennial (June 10, 2015), The Library of America and editor James Wood present the final volume in the definitive edition of Saul Bellow’s complete novels. In the last stage of his unparalleled career—which included winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1976—Saul Bellow remained an uproarious comic storyteller, a provocative thinker deeply engaged with the intellectual cross-currents of his time, and a magnificent prose stylist. Gathered here are four shorter works—What Kind of Day Did You Have? (1984), A Theft (1989), The Bellarosa Connection (1989), and The Actual (1997)—along with More Die of Heartbreak (1987), a novel that “changes the way you see everything” (Martin Amis), and Bellow’s extraordinary valedictory, Ravelstein (2000), about a professor of political philosophy made suddenly famous by an unlikely bestseller. Brimming with Bellow’s characteristic wit and ebullience, but imbued with the awareness of approaching death, Bellow’s final book is an unforgettable meditation on love and friendship, eros and mortality.

Who gets the last laugh?
By H. Schneider
This LoA volume combines 2 novels and 4 novellas from Saul Bellow's late period. It seems to me that Bellow became more entertaining with age. Quite possibly I misunderstand this and he was really damned serious. I am quite often not sure. In view of this uncertainty, I may have to conclude, after reading all the Bellow volumes in the Library of America, that we are not a very good match, Mr.Bellow and I. We have a wave length issue. That leads to some ambivalence in my relationship with this Noble man. Did he deserve it?

The volume opens with 'What Kind of Day Did You Have?', a novella.
Aging intellectual alpha male celebrity has affair with middle aged middle class divorcee and mother. The story focuses on the adventures of one day, full of movement, problems, conflicts, and even danger. I would like the novella more without the typical Bellowian taurofeces that sprout from the mouth of the great man. Verbal diarrhea is a common disease of Bellow men. I have always assumed that it was meant to be funny. What if I was wrong? It is funny, but maybe it isn't meant to be? That would be a killer.

The novella is followed by a normal size novel, 'More Die of Heartbreak'. A professor of Russian lit tells us about his own life and his uncle's, a leading botany expert. Quite entertaining, with a funny focus on Eros versus Thanatos. How do we handle this lamentable aging trouble? I have reviewed the novel separately.

Then comes the unique novella 'A Theft'. It is unique in Bellow's universe for having a female main character. It turns out, she is not much different from a Bellow man, being of the talkative variety. She is the bread winner of her family of five, a leading figure in fashion writing. Three little daughters are looked after by a pleasure- loving Austrian au pair, a girl with manners and class, and with a suspect Haitian boyfriend.
Most of the time, I have no idea what the chatterbox is going on about. When things finally do happen and she has to act, I dislike her even more. The story does actually have potential, but Bellow manages to waste much of it.

Then another unique one for Bellow: 'The Bellarosa Connection' is told us by a totally rational and clear spoken man, a professional memory expert, who tells us of a relative's escape from the Holocaust via the help of a VIP with underworld links. The saved man would so love to thank his benefactor, if that one would only let him. The refugee marries an obese New Jersey woman, who turns out a more interesting person than he himself.
I can't immediately think of any other text in the Bellow universe that was so accessible, straightforward and 'normal'. On the downside: enough already with the fat jokes. And: it is not normal that Bellow used the real name of the VIP in question.

Another novella follows: 'The Actual'. Gossip from the world of the super rich and their service providers. Narrator is a not so young antique dealer. Very rich people have involved him and an interior decorator, who happens to be his high-school crush, in the acquisition of a classy Chicago apartment. The two people, who might have been a couple, but hadn't become one, reminisce about the whens and whys of missed options or opportunities.
Bellow has a lesson for me. Quote: retirement is an illusion; not a reward, but a mantrap. Now I must think about that.

The volume ends with 'Ravelstein', Bellow's last novel. I reviewed it separately. I am not enthusiastic about it. Much BS is spread out. I suspect that Bellow himself was easily fooled by big talk.

Now I have completed my Bellow project. In case that LoA adds another Bellow volume (non-fiction?), I may well skip that. Honestly, not all of the time was well spent. But how would I know if I don't find out myself? Can I trust any of you other reviewers?
