Yegan Kander was born as a third generation South African Indian. He started writing at sixteen about frogs that cause humans to spontaneously combust.
The author studied filmmaking and broadcasting at the University of Technology.
He spends his spare time listening to eighties music, reading scary books and regretting it late at night.

Thrilling and contemporary read!

I must first admit that the author is a close friend of mine. I had known about the publication of this book - but not any details about the story, characters and plot.
Born to his mother, in unusual circumstances, Surya lives with his loving, albeit protective grandparents. While initially home-schooled, from a very young age, he realizes that he is different from other children. When he goes to high school, his experiences are filled with unexpected friendships, mystery, magic and non-stop adventure. His tale is inextricably linked to his mysterious past – as he goes about discovering his secret powers and abilities while protecting a young princess, and battling shape-shifting werewolves and witches.
There are shades of Joseph Campbell’s ‘The Heroes Journey’ – I particularly enjoyed the characters that teach him about his powers. There is also a healthy dose of Chinese, Buddhist and Hindu mythology all told within a believable, modern-day South African setting. Finally, I liked the very visual nature of the story-telling and the pacing of the excitement. I enjoyed this read and would recommend it to all fans of fantasy and swash-buckling adventure.
